The army's Bombay Engineering Group (BEG), which is constructing foot over-bridges (FOBs) at three stations in the Mumbai metropolitian region, has said that the first of these bridges will be ready at Ambivli station by January 31.
On September 29, 23 people died in a stampede at Elphinstone Road foot over bridge following which railway minister Piyush Goyal, Union defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman and chief minister Devendra Fadnavis visited the site on October 31 and announced that FOBs will be constructed by the army at Ambivli, Currey Road and Elphinstone Road.
A senior
army officer, associated with the project, told TOI on Tuesday, "The basic structure of the FOB will come up at Ambivli by January 16 and the final work for making the bridge operational for public use will be completed by January 31. We have communicated the January 16 date to the railway authorities for launch of the bridge structure and have requested them to stop railway traffic and suspend power at least for five hours so that our troops can carry out installation process smoothly."
He said, "The railway authorities have suggested January 21 for installation of the bridge structure considering that it is a Sunday and they will have to cancel less number of trains to avoid inconvenience to people. So far, we have received all kinds of assistance from the railway authorities. But this time we can't afford to change our plan, otherwise, it will be difficult for us to meet January 31 deadline for completion of work," the officer informed.
Army sources said that they have completed the crucial base construction work at Elphinstone Road and the Curry Road railway stations. "The pile foundation and other necessary work have been completed at these two stations. Now, we are in a position to complete the work," sources added.

To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...
