Coaches have a standard life time of 25 years. However coaches that are more than 15-18 years old, if found to be in a reasonably good condition, are repaired (or rehabilitated) at designated workshops to extend their lifetime by a few more years.
Not all coaches undergo this, but if a coach has been maintained in a relatively good condition, its life time can be extended for a short time by doing the necessary replacement of parts and repairs.
He is talking about 92 coach. So surely should be scrapped by 2017.
But still in use?
That is why I mentioned the mid-life rehabilitation (MLR). In MLR, they completely strip down the coach and perform major repair works, corrosion repairs and other heavy tasks that are not done during the regular POH of the coaches. This increases the lifetime of coaches which may otherwise be prematurely condemned. Depending on the extent of rehabilitation and the subsequent maintenance, the coach may be permitted to operate for 1-2 years more than its intended lifetime (26-27 years instead of 25) as the MLR is almost like building a new coach. Such coaches were more common many years ago. I guess these days, the codal life limit is more strict.
But yes, a more likely reason...
