CLOSED on Mondays.
National Rail Museum is a nice place to hangout especially for railfans. Weekends may attract larger...
more... crowds, so choose a weekday if possible. The Museum is broadly divided into two parts, one part is a building and the other part is an open space having old locomotives and carriages at display. There is a toy train named Joy Express which gives an overview of the area of the museum.
Miniature trains, models of stations like Lucknow, CSMT, Chennai Central, etc are present in the central area of the open space in the museum. And newly introduced attractive ride having mini rail tracks and small but open coaches pulled by a prototype of WDG5 Bheem locomotive. The couplings and the track-wheel arrangement is just amazing. CBC mini coupling can be seen in one the pictures.
A Loco turn-table, which was used earlier for Loco reversal can be seen here. MGS WDM4, KTE WDM2, BZA WAG 1 named Bidhan can be seen as archives. Steam loco lovers will delight to see many of them in the museum. Please see for Broad Gauge Steam locomotives, especially their wheels (upto 6.5 feet diameter); leaves one awestruck. It must be really amazing to watch a BG steam engine moving (will visit Rewadi shed one day..!!).
The building consists of the prototypes of different coaches and old steam locomotives. There is a city re-creation where mini-trains, metro rail, airport, etc is shown.
There is a Cafeteria and a small eatery, both managed by IRCTC, in the premises.
If you love to purchase a souvenir, there is a shop for the same.
Overall it is a nice place for people of all ages to spend quality time with family and friends. Please do visit NRM.
The pictures will give you a fair idea of the description. Thanks for reading this.
