is to be located at Ajni where Central Railway's Nagpur Division has allocated 13,000 sq.mtrs of land to Alstom. Ajni already boasts of an ELS which is presently run by Central Railway and the new facility will come up at the existing loco shed, it is learnt.
PoH of the locomotives is meant to increase their serviceability and ensure they run smoothly during
their lifetime.As per the agreement inked between the French giant Alstom and Railway Board, the company is to manufacture and supply 12,000 HP electric locomotives. Railways is focussing on the freight movement and hence contracted for purchase of 800 such high capacity locos that can transform the way goods are to be carried in near future. The 12,000 HP locomotives would be manufactured at the Madhepura factory in Bihar while maintenance of electric locos would be in Ajni and Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh.
While work on Saharanpur ELS has started the one at Ajni in Nagpur would be taken-up in second phase as more of 12,000 HP gets delivered to Railways.
The project has envisaged a period from 2018 to 2028 wherein the 800 new locomotives from Alstom would be delivered in phases to Railways.
The 12,000 HP locos are primarily meant for the dedicated freight corridor in the first phase as Railways plans to shift its high volume goods traffic there.
The Ajni project is still on drawing board as it envisages a time period of eight years but Ajni and particularly Nagpur has been zeroed in owing to its central location. The connectivity at Nagpur and ample space availability along with existing loco shed weighed in the decision of Railway Board to choose Ajni.
Alstom would also initially run the ELS and along side the train the Indian manpower in servicing of the 12,000 HP locomotives, the first of the giant locos has been recently inducted in Indian Railways. The ELS will later be transferred to Indian Railways and in future both the sheds would be integrated for better management, the top railway officials have said.
The new ELS would open up fresh job avenues for the technical manpower that too highly skilled as the 12,000 HP would be of highly advanced version.
