Though the contribution of Ballari district towards the revenues of the Hubballi division of South Western Railway Zone has been hefty, the rail facilities and amenities are not commensurate, feels passengers from the region.
The district has been a major contributor to the freight revenue of the division with the transportation of iron ore and steel and cement produced here. However, after the ban on export of iron ore by the State government the freight revenue dipped considerably. But it still continues to be high.
As per information provided the Railways to Y.
Yamunesh, an activist, the total freight revenue earnings of Hubballi division for 2015-16 was Rs. 3,417.13 crore, of which Rs. 1,971.97 crore came from Ballari district.
Similarly in 2016-17, of the total Rs. 3,025.31 crore, Rs. 1,648.18 crore came from Ballari.
The contribution of Koppal district, with a couple of steel industries, was Rs. 47.28 crore and Rs. 40.96 crore successively.
“Our district has been contributing a hefty freight revenue to the railways, but the facilities and amenities are meagre. Except for introducing a couple of passenger trains and weekly specials, most demands have not been fulfilled. The passenger amenities at Hosapete railway station, which is adjacent Hampi, an international tourist destination, are also very minimum. Such has been the situation even after memorandum being given to senior officials,” he told The Hindu .
He also blames the elected representatives of the region for not raising their voice at the appropriate forum.
Babulal Jain, former member of National Rail Users’ Consultative Committee, while admitting that more and more train facilities need to be introduced in this region, says that steps were being initiated in this regard by the railway authorities.
“Special trains were run through Hosapete-Ballari temporarily. What we want is that these trains should be run permanently like the ones being run to Katra and Shiradi. Hosapete and Ballari have been categorised as ‘A’ grade stations based on the revenue contribution,” he added.

However, "eligibility" does NOT always mean...
