The Western Railway’s (WR) Matunga Road station will become the city’s second suburban railway station to be manned by an all-woman team starting March 8, International Women’s Day. Matunga station on the Central Railway, the first railway station in the country to be run by an all-woman staff, has already entered the Limca Book of Records 2018 for the rare feat.
In June last year, Mirror was the first to report that after General Manager DK Sharma mooted the idea for a women’s-only team, CR had appointed such teams to operate the station.
station was formally handed over to them on July 12, 2017. Currently, a total of 41women staffers, including 17 booking clerks, six RPF personnel, eight ticket-checkers, five point persons, two railway announcers and three cleaning staffers are working at Matunga under the supervision of station manager Mamta Kulkarni.
“In a unique endeavour to ensure women’s empowerment, the Western Railway has appointed all-women staff at its suburban Matunga Road station. Western Railway has posted a total of 31 women staffers as frontline staff, comprising commercial, operating and security department,” said Mukul Jain, divisional railway manager, WR Mumbai central division.
According to Ravinder Bhakar, Chief PRO, WR, the commercial department of WR has deployed 13 commercial clerks and three ticket checking staff to undertake commercial activities, whereas 11operating staff (station master and points persons), and four RPF personnel have been deployed at Matunga Road Station.
“These staff shall be handling overall operations of Matunga Road station around the clock. In addition to this, WR will also collaborate with the Rotary Club of Bombay Queen, and has planned the beautification of Matunga Road station. We will be putting up theme-based paintings depicting the diversified role and empowerment of women in society across booking offices, station superintendent’s office and FoBs,” Bhakar said.
Sandhya Kiran Verma, station superintendent will be in charge of the station, assisted by Archana Yadav and Bhagyashree, both station mangers.
The CR is also planning to celebrate Women’s Day. “We are planning all-women staff on board the Deccan Queen, which runs between Mumbai and Pune, on Thursday to commemorate Women’s Day. Surekha Yadav, one of CR’s train drivers, is likely to operate the train,” said SK Jain, divisional railway manger, CR Mumbai division.
“We will also be setting up a special counter at CSMT station, managed by all-women staff on March 8, seeking suggestions from women commuters on making their journey more pleasurable. Suggestions will be screened by the railway administration and implemented as feasible,” Jain said.
