- World's oldest working locomotive built 1855 The 'Fairy Queen', the world's oldest working steam locomotive, is built by the British firm Kitson, Thompson and Hewitson for the East Indian Railway Company. July 4, 1881 The famous 'toy train' service officially opens in northeastern India. The steam engines that run on the two-feet wide narrow guage track are today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. A huge draw with tourists, the journey offers stunning views of the Himalayas and travels up to Ghum, India's highest station.
- On-board toilets introduced 1891 The first toilets are installed on first-class carriages. Around 20 years later, toilets are introduced on all other classes, after apparently a letter to a local railway office in West Bengal from a passenger called Okhil Chandra Sen, who in 1909 complained about missing his train after having to go to the loo off the train.
- Partition splits rail network Aug 14, 1947 After the hasty partition of the Asian subcontinent by departing British colonialists, India is forced to reroute and construct thousands of kilometres of new rail tracks. Today, the Samjhauta Express, a twice-weekly train, is one of only two trains to run from India and Pakistan, while the Maitree Express returned to service after over 40 years in 2008 to link Kolkata and the Bangladeshi capital, Dhaka.
- Nationalisation 1951 India's railway network, made up of over 40 different systems, is nationalised, creating a single unit. Today, Indian Railways is one of the world's largest employers, hiring around 1.4 million people.
- The railways in Bollywood Aug 15, 1975 From wooing leading ladies to bashing villains, trains have played a colorful cameo in some of the biggest Hindi films ever. The 1975 action blockbuster 'Sholay' had a first-of-its-kind train robbery scene that supposedly took seven weeks to shoot. Years later, in 1998, megastar Shah Rukh Khan featured in the iconic 'Chaiyya Chaiyya' music video taken from the 1998 movie 'Dil Se' shot on top of the historic Nilgiri Mountain Railway.
- Fastest train launched 1988 Travelling at speeds of over 150 kmph, the Bhopal Shatabdi Express is introduced as India's fastest train. Marking the birth centenary of the country's first prime minister, Jawaharlal Nehru, the train operates from New Delhi to Bhopal. Several Shatabdi trains are now in operation between major cities and are India's high-end trains, where passengers are offered a three-course meal and TV entertainment
- Booking tickets online Aug 3, 2002 The launch of an online booking portal brings the Indian Railways into the 21st century, allowing travellers to reserve seats from the comfort of their home, putting an end to the laborious task of standing in long queues to buy tickets at stations. Around 450,000 tickets are booked on the IRCTC.co.in website every day but is hampered by regular service outages and complaints by users of failed transactions.
- Deadly crashes Jul 7, 2011 Over 100 people are killed in two incidents in Uttar Pradesh in one week, causing public uproar and a reminder that India's rail network is among the world's deadliest. The first leaves 38 people dead when a train hits a bus at an unmanned level crossing on July 7. Three days later, 70 people are killed and more than 300 hurt when a train derails.
