Hyderabad: An intensified effort to ensure safety on the tracks has seen the South Central Railway achieving a unique distinction, that of being a zone where not a single collision or accident has been reported at level-crossings over the last three years. The last time an accident was reported was at an unmanned railway level crossing in Masaipet village of Medak on July 24, 2014 when a school bus was hit by a passenger train, killing two students.Since then, the SCR has intensified safety measures to avoid accidents. Last year, 137 unmanned level crossings were done away with, while limited height subways (LHS) and other passages were constructed.According to SCR officials, the zero accident status at level crossings in the last three years was achieved with continuous scrutiny and inspections. For creating awareness on safety, officials also took up counseling and safety seminars for assistant station managers, loco-pilots, guards, gatemen, guards and others....

There were night inspections as well, to check whether employees concerned were alert and those found irresponsible were penalised. In the past, Indian Railways had deployed ‘Rail Mitras’ who stay nearby unmanned level crossings to alert or sensitize passersby using red flags to avoid using unmanned level crossings. This apart, the Railway Protection Force and Safety Department were going to manned and unmanned level crossings and distributing pamphlets to educate the public on the dangers of using unmanned level crossings. At present, there are about 1,499 manned level crossings in SCR zone, including 500 gates in Telangana, while there are 87 unmanned level crossings in the Zone. Officials have also prepared a road map to eliminate them by September. With the completion of Road Under Bridge at the last unmanned level crossing on May 25, the Hyderabad Division has eliminated all unmanned level crossings on all routes in its jurisdiction.Secunderabad and Vijayawada divisions have already achieved the target by eliminating them. And now, the entire Telangana has become safe region regarding safety at unmanned level crossings. In order to provide enhanced safety, Vinod Kumar Yadav, General Manager of SCR focused on elimination of all unmanned level crossings and a record number of 60 such types of crossings have been eliminated over the zone in the two months period of current financial year.To keep a watch on the 500 manned level crossings in the State, 1,400 gatemen have been deployed in shifts. To strengthen safety at manned level crossing gates, CCTV cameras were also installed at 11 places.Unmanned level crossings are done away with by constructing level crossing gates, road over bridges, road under bridges, limited height subways at small gates and by diverting vehicles to the nearest manned levels crossings.

@all: At this time, the PNR Forum is functioning again, albeit at a greatly reduced volume and efficiency. Refreshing PNRs is a very cumbersome affair. We may expect this to end as well, eventually, as the Govt. tightens these controls further. At IRI, we CANNOT waste any more time on this fruitless...
