May 30, 2018 00:00 IST One of the coaches of the Sealdah-New Delhi Rajdhani Express that was attacked at Manpur station. Telegraph picture Gaya/Calcutta: At least three passengers were injured when a group of men pelted stones...
at the Sealdah-New Delhi Rajdhani Express at Bihar's Manpur station on Monday night. The attackers were passengers of an express train that had been stranded for several hours before being further halted to make way for the Rajdhani, said railway officials. The Rajdhani Express, headed to New Delhi, was passing through Manpur station in Gaya district around 10.40pm when the incident took place. Six coaches and the pantry car had their windows broken by the stones. Three women passengers were among those injured. Sova Gupta, 53, received leg injuries; K Banerjee, 62, was hit by a glass shard near her left eye and J. Banerjee, 30, suffered a bruise in her right hand. All three received first aid after the train reached Gaya, 5km from Manpur, around 15 minutes later. While Gupta's destination was Gaya, the other two continued with their onward journey to Delhi. The chief medical officer of Gaya Railway Hospital D.K. Sahay said none of the passengers received serious injuries. "Nobody has been hospitalised," Sahay said. The damaged windows were repaired and the glass shards also removed at Gaya station, said a railway official. The sudden attack came as a shock to passengers of the premium train. Most of them were asleep when the incident took place. "I was jolted out of my sleep by the sound of glass cracking. We ducked under the seats for cover," said a passenger of B11 coach, one of those affected. The stone throwers were passengers of the Gaya-Howrah Express, said police and railway officials. After starting late by nearly five hours, the train was detained at Manpur station for another five hours. "The Gaya-Howrah Express got inordinately delayed because of a snag in the tracks was being repaired," said Manpur station director Pavinesh Patel. The route of the train was abruptly changed because of the repair. It was announced that instead of its regular route via Kiul, the train would be diverted through Dhanbad. The sudden announcement enraged passengers. As the Rajdhani reached Manpur, a section of the irate passengers resorted to heavy stone pelting. Rail police arrived at the spot to control the situation. After the Rajdhani passed through, officials revoked the diversion of the express train. The tracks were repaired and it resumed its journey through the original route. Movement of trains on the Gaya-Dhanbad section remained paralysed for more than three hours. A case has been lodged with the GRP in Gaya against unidentified people. "An internal inquiry has started. We are trying to identify the culprits and take strict action against them," said a senior official at the Eastern Railway headquarters in Calcutta.
