The last leg of the Magenta Line began operations on Tuesday.
The first day of passenger operations on the Delhi Metro’s entire Magenta Line saw a ridership of over two lakh passengers, the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) said on Wednesday.
“The utilisation of Magenta Line [Janakpuri West to Botanical Garden], after its extension from Kalkaji Mandir to Janakpuri West on Tuesday, was done by 2,87,413 passengers [sic],” said a DMRC official.
newly opened section, however, reportedly faced snags on Wednesday.
The DMRC officials confirmed that there were “minor issues”. “There were minor interlocking issues and it was resolved within a few minutes,” said an official.
Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal and Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri had flagged off the first train on the Kalkaji Mandir-Janakpuri West corridor of the line on Monday. The first leg of the Magenta Line, from Botanical Garden to Kalkaji Mandir, was thrown open to the public in December last year.
DMRC officials said that prior to opening the second leg of the Magenta Line, the ridership was over 81,000.
“Before the opening of the new section, the utilisation of the Botanical Garden to Kalkaji Mandir stretch was 81,880 on May 28,” said the official.
Ease of travel
The Magenta Line promises to reduce travel time between Gurugram and Noida to 50 minutes as opposed to the 90 minutes that it took earlier. With four interchange stations at Hauz Khas, Kalkaji Mandir, Botanical Garden and Janakpuri West, commuters will be able to access the Yellow, Violet and Blue Lines respectively.
The line also puts IGI Airport’s domestic T-1 terminal on the mass transit network map. “The overall utilisation of the metro system on May 29 was by over 45 lakh passengers,” added the DMRC official.
