HARIDWAR: Massive traffic jams were witnessed in Haridwar city on Monday after the railways started construction work of an over bridge at Bhagat Singh Chowk. The chowk route is a prominent thoroughfare that connects SIDCUL, BHEL and other places with Haridwar town.
Police said that they were not informed by the railways before starting the work and they will be sending a notice to them for starting the work without prior intimation and causing inconvenience to the people. However, railway officials said that they had communicated the plan to the district administration before starting the work.
tackle the traffic snarls, police, meanwhile, announced a new traffic plan for the city on Monday evening. Construction work will continue for the next four months and the plan will be in place till then.
Construction work is going on for doubling the railway track in Haridwar for the past one year. Now the railways have started work of an over bridge at Bhagat Singh Chowk and the road has been closed for digging work.
With the blockade, long traffic jams started and police was not prepared to tackle the situation.
Haridwar senior superintendent of police, Krishna Kumar VK, said, “We had no information about construction work of railway. They blocked the main route without giving any information and a notice will be given to the railways. A new traffic plan has been prepared for the city in which one-way traffic plan has been introduced at Tibdi railway crossing and Arya Nagar railway crossing of Jwalapur for going towards SIDCUL.”
However, railway claimed that proper information was given to district administration before starting the work. Raj Kumar, executive engineer of railway construction wing said, “We had given information to the district administration on May 7. How can we start the work without giving information? The construction work will take at least four months and we will finish the work in time.”
Meanwhile, residents faced a lot of inconvenience due to the blockade. Angry residents asked the district administration to complete the work after the yatra season.
Tarun Gupta, a local resident said, “This is not the right time to start work in this area as it is peak yatra season and Haridwar is packed with pilgrims and tourist. District administration should take note of the matter.”
Meanwhile, even after repeated efforts, TOI couldn’t reach sub-divisional magistrate Manish Kumar for a comment.
