This year may not be different as one of dewatering pumps at Malad subway stopped working, leading to traffic diversion and waterlogging.
As a precaution for the safety of passengers, the Konkan Railway (KR) has instructed its motormen to reduce the speed of trains to 40 kmph during heavy rainfall. Besides, it has initiated various other measures for better communication.
The monsoon is expected to hit the Konkan coast in a couple of days. Mumbai shoreline is part of the 720-km Konkan coast. The weatherman has warned heavy to very heavy rain
in Konkan from June 7 to June 9. However, KR is going to implement the monsoon timetable from June 10.
Considered one of the most treacherous hilly terrains, the Konkan Railway winds its way from Kolad in Raigad district to Mangalore. The route was built by cutting mountains and crosses over many bridges on rivers and creeks, making it prone to landslides and other rain-induced calamities.
A KR officer said that they will invariably reduce the train speed to 75-90 kmph from 100 kmph during the monsoon. “Loco pilots have been asked to further bring the speed down to 40kmph, if there is heavy rain and visibility is very low,” said the official.
Besides, about 770 personnel will patrol the route at vulnerable locations during the monsoon, said VK Verma, chief spokesperson of KR.
Meanwhile, the railway said that they have provided mobile phones to loco pilots, station masters and field officials for emergency. The train crew has been provided with walkie-talkies and every station equipped with a 25-watt VHF base station, to enable wireless communication.
Emergency communication sockets have been provided at every one km along the route.
