MUMBAI: To stop commuters from blocking entries and exits at railway stations and foot overbridges in the rainy season, teams of securitymen on the Central Railway are turning into “crowd movers”.
After last year’s Elphinstone Road stampede that killed 23, authorities want to ensure people do not crowd around station access points. Eight stations have been identified where personnel from the Railway Protection Force (RPF) and Maharashtra Security Force (MSF) will force out commuters that block entries and exits. Securitymen will get fluorescent jackets so that they stand out.

commuters tend to huddle at the entries and exits of stations or foot overbridges because they do not want to get drenched. We had an unsavoury experience at one of the stations during pre-monsoon showers earlier this week. Commuters refused to budge from the entries and exits, causing massive inconvenience to the others,” said a senior official from the RPF. “Our personnel will have to take a diplomatic approach as tempers are likely to flare up. We will be polite but firm,” the official said.
The eight stations are Masjid, Chinchpokli, Currey Road, Parel, Dadar, Kurla, Ghatkopar and Thane. Each FOB will have at least four uniformed personnel working in shifts. “Chinchpokli station has a peculiar problem. Its FOB is a ramp which could turn slippery during rainy season. The ramp opens outside a booking office, a tiny cramped space where commuters take shelter from the rain. Once one steps out of this space, there is a road overbridge with a very narrow pavement for pedestrians. This situation makes it necessary for guards to be present at the entry and exit,” said an official.
FOBs leading to platforms 1 and 2 at Dadar and platforms 5 and 6 at Thane also see excessive crowds and will be monitored.
A major meeting of all RPF chowky in-charges was held on Friday to discuss crowd management at stations.

However, "eligibility" does NOT always mean...

@all: While we do nominally allow multiple IDs, these multiple IDs are NOT allowed to engage in misuse and "mischief". Voting multiple times in the same poll using multiple IDs, rating each other IDs' blogs using multiple IDs, etc. are classified as "gross misuse". . This is an advance notice that some of the...
