All railway officials were positioned in the control room and then directed to the areas where there was waterlogging
Despite heavy rainfall and waterlogging on the tracks, the suburban local trains were operational on Saturday, though there were some delays in the services.
The local trains on the central railway were operating with a delay of 25 minutes due to wall debris falling between Vidyavihar and Ghatkopar railway stations. A minor delay was caused when a tree fell near Kanjurmarg railway station. Three percent of local trains were cancelled on the
central railway main line.
On Saturday evening, a technical failure occurred at Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) on the outstation tracks. The fast train services heading towards CSMT were also delayed as a result.
Trains on the harbour, trans-harbour and western lines were delayed by 10 minutes. A block was also undertaken for 30 minutes by the BMC for tree-cutting after which the suburban railway services began plying.
One of the reasons for a better show by the Railways this time around was because officials were deployed at all the major waterlogging spots to monitor the functioning of pumps and check on the water level on the tracks.
Last year, local train operations were completely shut because of waterlogging and several trains got marooned on August 29 after heavy rains (nearly 300mm in two days) lashed the city. While it did not rain as much on Saturday, the Bombardier local trains which were introduced on the central railway fared well as there was no marooning of the rakes.
“All railway officials were positioned in the control room and then directed to the areas where there was waterlogging. Despite waterlogging and heavy rainfall of nearly 160mm, we were able to operate the local train services. The 1,000 cubic metre-water pumps also worked well.” said SK Jain, divisional railway manager, central railway.
The Brihanmumbai Electric Supply and Transport (BEST) diverted its buses from six routes where there was waterlogging. The routes included Bandra Talkies on SV Road, Kings Circle, Matunga Dr BA Road, Hindmata Cinema Road, Hemant Manjrekar Marg, Pratiksha Nagar and Parel TT.
Meanwhile, the central railway has cancelled the work on the commissioning of a new platform at Parel. This was to be undertaken on Sunday but due to heavy rainfall, the work has been cancelled. The western railway has also cancelled their maintenance block, which was to be undertaken on Sunday.

@all: While we do nominally allow multiple IDs, these multiple IDs are NOT allowed to engage in misuse and "mischief". Voting multiple times in the same poll using multiple IDs, rating each other IDs' blogs using multiple IDs, etc. are classified as "gross misuse". . This is an advance notice that some of the...
