KOLKATA: Even as the city was swept by the much-awaited thundershower on Wednesday, a six-car train of East-West Metro was taken out on its first test run around Salt Lake’s maintenance depot.
The test run within the upkeep-cum-parking hub for the East West Metro coaches at Salt Lake Central Park was a routine affair, engineers claimed. But it created quite a flutter among the workers as the rainwashed stainless rake was driven out of the stabling line around noon. “Within the depot, a series of tests must be conducted at static and running status. The electrical charging on the third rail inside the depot had to be checked,” said a source. The train was driven around slowly at not more than 15kmph

for around 1.5km.
Electrical engineers and officials of KMRC, which is implementing the Rs 8,475-crore Metro project, received the first two sets of cars from Bengaluru-based Bharat Earth Movers Limited on April 24 and May 7. For now, the officials are trying to complete a significant part of the tests required to ensure a smooth trial run next month and then the launch of the truncated 6km commercial operation between Salt Lake’s Sector V and Stadium in October.
For the full-fledged trail run expected in July, the train, after several routine test runs inside the depot, will be lifted to the viaduct through a ramp connecting the depot to the Central Park station. “On completion of electrical and signalling work and integration of these systems, trial run will begin,” an official said. During trial run, trains are operated back and forth to test the working of various systems. “This exercise will continue till the operations begin after Commissioners of Metro Rail Safety gives the green signal,” he said.
Before the trial run, a lot of tests, like that of gauge, traction and brake system and signalling, along with the electromagnetic compatibility check, have to be carried out. Last-minute touches are being given to the six stations between Sector V and Salt Lake Stadium.
