Mumbai: Bandra Terminus has jumped eight places to become the seventh cleanest station in the country, according to a survey by the Quality Council of India (QCI). It is the only station from Mumbai to feature on the top 10 station list. However, Kalyan (74th rank), which handles both suburban and long-distance train services, has earned the notorious distinction of being the second most dirtiest station in the country. Last year, it was ranked 63. Kalyan resident Vishwas Gaikwad agrees with the survey. “Kalyan is one of the dirtiest stations; there’s litter everywhere. The loos stink. The station needs a fresh coat of paint,” he said. But a Central Railway official said, “Stations like Kalyan and Thane are challenging to maintain because of the massive suburban commuter traffic. It is a non-stop process to keep the station premises clean.”Rajesh Tiwari from Ghatkopar can’t believe that Bandra Terminus is among the top...
10 stations in India. “It has one of the worst access and the subway gets flooded on rainy days.” As part of the Swachh Rail, Swachh Bharat campaign, railway stations have been ranked to promote cleanliness on the premises. The third report of the audit-cum-survey of ranking of cleanliness covers 407 stations across the country, which include 75 stations in A-1 category (they contribute above Rs 50 crore in annual passenger revenue) and 332 stations in A category (they contribute Rs 6 crore-Rs 50 crore in annual passenger revenue). Jodhpur has emerged the cleanest railway station in A1 category, followed by Jaipur and Tirupati, according to the survey conducted by the IRCTC. Marwar in Rajasthan emerged as the cleanest station in A category, followed by Phulera and Warangal.Surprisingly, Bandra Terminus, which handles train services to north and west India, has left Mumbai Central behind. Mumbai Central, which runs Rajdhani and Shatabdi class trains, has ranked 40; last year, it was 27th on the list. “Mumbai Central handles a lot of suburban services, unlike Bandra Terminus, which only caters to mail/express trains. More crowd means more litter,” said a Western Railway (WR) official. WR chief PRO Ravinder Bhakar said, “Mumbai Central did not score on a few parameters like signages, circulating area and platform surface. We will prepare a comprehensive plan for Mumbai Central so ensure it makes it into the top 10 next year.”CR has reason to be happy with the survey as Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and Dadar have been listed among the top 10 ‘improving stations’ in A1 category. CSMT has been ranked 13, up from last year’s 44, while Dadar has been ranked 49; in 2017, it was ranked 70. “Cleanliness at CSMT has improved over the past several months. Even the toilets are maintained better,” said Chetna Jani from Mulund. Lokmanya Tilak Terminus at Kurla and Thane station have also made an impression as their overall ranking improved from 66 to 35 and from 68 to 57 respectively. “The performance of CR stations is impressive because of sustained efforts like mechanised cleaning. We have increased periodicity of the cleaning process, with more emphasis during non-peak hours,” said CR chief PRO S K Jain. “We will adopt a cluster system, wherein four to five stations will be clubbed together in one contract to achieve similar level of cleanliness. Kalyan’s ranking will improve in the next survey.” (Inputs from New Delhi)

@all: At this time, the PNR Forum is functioning again, albeit at a greatly reduced volume and efficiency. Refreshing PNRs is a very cumbersome affair. We may expect this to end as well, eventually, as the Govt. tightens these controls further. At IRI, we CANNOT waste any more time on this fruitless...
