Display boards do not show platform numbers till the last minute, forcing passengers to run for their trains in spite of arriving early
If you’ve arrived at Pune railway station well before time but still had to run for you train, or worse, missed it, don’t blame yourself. The Pune railway station administration has become increasingly lackadaisical at updating the platform numbers. In many cases occurring every day, the information boards are updated mere minutes before the train’s departure time, forcing hapless passengers to run frantically to their platforms. To make matters worse, Pune station has no enquiry counter as the existing one is under renovation at present. Therefore, the only options to update passengers are display boards and computerised announcements. And, neither seems
too efficient at the moment. On Sunday evening, when Mirror visited the station, the chaos was apparent. For instance, the Chennai-Ahmedabad Express reaches Pune station at 5.15 pm and departs after a halt of five minutes. On Sunday, till 5.19 pm, neither was the platform numbers displayed, nor was there any announcement forthcoming.People were seen glued to the giant display board at both entrances of the station. Akshay Patel, who was travelling with his 71-year-old grandfather to Ahmedabad from Pune, had been had arrived at the railway station at 4.30 pm. “It is 5.10 pm now, and the board is still not showing what platform the train will arrive at. There is no announcement either. If I have to go to platform no. 6 with my granddad, I may miss the train,” said Patel, who also asked a number of shopkeepers about the usual platform number, but in vain.Similarly, the CSMT-Latur SF Express train is scheduled to arrive at Pune station at 12.30 am. But, till 12.21 am, there was no information about its scheduled platform.“The board is showing only the time, but not the platform number. It may show it after the train departs,” said Sohail Haris Khan, who was to travel to Latur with his wife and child.Another instance was the Pune-Manmad passenger train, leaving Pune at 12.30 am. It was 12.27 when the display showed that the train would arrive at platform number 6.Passenger Sunil Sharma was to travel to Shirdi and had booked his ticket till Kopargaon. He, too, kept waiting and looking at the display board and finally had to rush to platform no. 6 all the way from platform no. 1.Platform No 1 has the larger display boards and thus most passengers were seen waiting there. To rush to Platform No 6 in a couple of minutes is no mean feat.Speaking to Mirror, Pune’s divisional railway manager (DRM) Milind Deouskar, seemed surprised at this mismanagement and promised a prompt redressal. “If the platform numbers are not being displayed on time, it is a grave issue. I will look into it and have it resolved immediately. As per the timetable, the platform number should be displayed at least 20 minutes before any train’s departure or arrival. I will get it done from now on,” assured the DRM.

@all: At this time, the PNR Forum is functioning again, albeit at a greatly reduced volume and efficiency. Refreshing PNRs is a very cumbersome affair. We may expect this to end as well, eventually, as the Govt. tightens these controls further. At IRI, we CANNOT waste any more time on this fruitless...
