MARGAO: The multi-modal logistics park at Balli station on the Konkan Railway route which was thrown open for freight container traffic over two months ago, has been witnessing steady movement of traffic. The Container Corporation of India (CONCOR) which manages the park is likely to make it fully operational with all state-of-the-art facilities by October.
Addressing reporters during a guided tour of the park for mediapersons on Wednesday, CONCOR officials said that already 1,120 containers, each weighing 30 tonnnes of consignment, have been dispatched from the facility over the last two months. While mining major, Vedanta, is among CONCOR’s major clientele, sources said that the latter has been working closely with industry leaders in Goa, including Goa Chamber of Commerce and Industry
(GCCI), to attract more freight container traffic to the multi-modal logistics park.
The park has been set up with an investment of Rs 43 crore as per the MoU entered between KRCL and CONCOR. Though, sources said, the park will initially deal with domestic traffic, plans are afoot to equip the facility with all the infrastructure needed to handle Exim container traffic as well.
Sources said 5,000sqm of custom-bonded warehousing space is also being created and a host of value-added services like stuffing, repackaging, etc, will be available to its users. The park is spread over 84,000sqm.
Chairman, logistics committee, GCCI, Chandrakant Gawas, who was also present during the media interaction, exuded confidence that the multi-modal logistic park will prove to be a game-changer for the Goan industry.
“Besides being economical, transportation of goods by container freight will save costs upto 50% over transportation by road. GCCI will also try to create awareness among the industries about the facility. We will soon hold meetings at various industrial estates across the state,” Gawas said.
General manager, Konkan Railway Corporation Limited, Joseph George, in-charge of the multi-modal logistics park, A K Roy, and others were present on the occasion.
