KOLKATA: Shifting of the Beliaghata traffic guard has started to make way for a pier of the Airport-New Garia Metro corridor. The new traffic guard is being relocated below Maa flyover, opposite Silver Spring. The old one, right next to the starting point of the Chingrighata flyover on EM Bypass, is likely to be razed next month.A senior official of Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), the implementing agency of the 32km Metro corridor project, said: “The cops will take around 15 to 20 days for the shifting. Once it is done, we shall start demolishing the old traffic guard.”The existing traffic guard is at the spot where one of the 10 pillars of the viaduct are to be built. Finally, at a meeting between KMDA, the keepers of the Bypass, and RVNL officials, the decision to shift the traffic guard in May-end or June was taken. “But once again Kolkata Police sat on it, and we have had to request them more than once to shift the traffic guard,” said an RVNL official.Demolition of the guard will make way for 300m of viaduct along the EM Bypass to the point where the Chingrighata flyover ends. The Metro alignment will run along the Ultadanga-bound flank of the Bypass and then turn towards Nicco Park. A station, named after journalist Gour Kishor Ghosh, will come up 200m from where the flyover ends.“The Beliaghata traffic guard came up after the Airport-New Garia alignment was notified in 2011. While constructing the viaduct, we realized the traffic guard was right on the spot where pier No. 317 is supposed to come up,” said an RVNL official.RVNL is relieved that the bottleneck at this point, considered the most challenging phase of the project, is now going to be removed. The traffic guard’s new address had to be in the same area, since its jurisdiction includes Narkeldanga Main Road on one side and beyond Salt Lake stadium on the other. So, the location at Mathpukur, opposite Silver Spring, “It was easy to build structures below Maa flyover,” said an RVNL official. The structures will house the office and a mess for traffic officers.Once the existing traffic guard is pulled down, pier 317 will come up on the spot. This will make way for pier 318, which is planned right in the middle of Chingrighata crossing. Officials said these two piers were crucial to the viaduct, which turns towards Salt Lake Bypass at this point. Last month, Bidhannagar Police handed over the site for some piers on the Salt Lake Bypass, a few metres from the Chingrighata crossing. Therefore, the viaduct construction at this point is now likely to be filled up.
