The Government Railway Police on Friday arrested three juveniles who placed concrete slabs on the railway track of the elevated Mass Rapid Transport System (MRTS) between Velachery and Tamarani stations. This could have caused a major mishap in that section, officials said.
Last Sunday night, a loco pilot stopped the train after he heard a loud noise from the wheels when the train crossed the stretch between Velachery and Perungudi. The railway staff found cement concrete slabs on the tracks, shattered to pieces.
The GRP began investigation and ruled out any attempt of
sabotage. However, the loco pilots were advised to operate trains slowly in the section. On Tuesday, Railway ADGP C.Sylendra Babu and other higher officials inspected the spot, and issued an advisory to construct a wall on the side of the track. On Tuesday night, another loco pilot while coming from Perungudi to Taramani, spotted concrete slabs on the tracks.
A senior police officer said, “Sustained investigation revealed that the iron rods which were removed from concrete slabs were sold to a scrap dealer, whose shop was located near the tracks. We managed to nab a 17-year-old boy, and his two friends. They told us that they drew concrete slabs used for concealing cables that ran to signals. It was easier for them to separate iron rods from concrete slabs by keeping them on the tracks.”
The GRP booked a case against them under Section 151 of the Railways Act (Damage to or destruction of certain railway properties).
