On Friday, October 19, at least 59 people were mowed down by a speeding train in Amritsar, and another 72 were injured. People who gathered to attend a Dussehra celebration had spilled onto railway tracks while watching Ravana's effigy being burnt. The tragedy took place at the Joda Fatak area. CLAIM"If trains could be stopped for Muslims offering namaz, why cannot trains be halted for 'Ravan Dahan' during Dussehra celebrations?"This is the question some people are asking on social media platforms in the context of the Amritsar train tragedy. In a clear attempt to disrupt communal harmony, these people are trying to mislead people into believing that trains are halted for Muslims who are offering namaz on railway tracks. To support this false claim, fake-news purveyors are using photos from 2017 that shows Muslims offering namaz on railway tracks near Delhi's Achchan Mian Masjid. Sample these- ...
TRUTHThe photos shared by Twitter users, raising this question that can mislead many people, is from 2017 when some Muslims offered 'Alivda Namaz' (the last Friday prayer on Ramzan) on railway tracks near the New Delhi Railway station at Achchan Mian. The same set of images were used in the past too, to spread fake news. For instance, in May 2018, these images were circulated heavily on social media platforms and WhatsApp saying, "A train from Tamil Nadu, with students travelling to appear for the NEET exam was delayed by people offering namaz on the railway track."Bangalore Mirror busted this fake claim then. VERIFICATION AND METHODOLOGYA simple reverse-image search on Google will lead you to the TOI blog from 2017 on the ‘Alvida Namaz’ carrying the same set of images. Anindya Chattopadhyay, photojournalist with Times of India, covered the ‘Alvida Namaz’. Times Fact Check spoke to Chattopadhyay to get clarity on what happens during Ramzan. He said, “The Achchan Mian Masjid is between the New Delhi railway station and Sardar Bazar railway station. There are a few dead tracks there that are not used usually. Devotees use these tracks during Ramzan, and I've covered this for years. Rarely, some train engines are brought to these tracks, but no trains are halted to facilitate the namaz."Here's a video report about the Alvida Namaz on Times of India - VERDICTTimes Fact Check has confirmed that the set of images showing Muslims offering namaz on railway tracks are from 2017, and no train was halted for the same. Stay alert about the misleading claims and communally inciteful questions being raised using these set of images.
