Nagpur: Efforts of Railway Protection Force (RPF), Central Railway, went down the drain on Monday when the seized materials turned out to be some dried grasses, weeds and stones instead of suspected ganja. Earlier in the day, an alert RPF constable had nabbed a man with two bags after he had got down from the air-conditioned coach of Dakshin Express. It was initially expected that around 30-35kg of ganja would be seized from the bags after completing the formalities. The RPF and their Government Railway Police (GRP) counterparts were left stunned after the bags of the suspected persons were opened in presence of sub-divisional magistrate as per the provision of the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. The bags were found full of weeds and pebbles. Sources in the RPF said that the man, a native of Nagpur, had boarded the train from Vishakhapatnam a day ago. He got down...

at Nagpur railway station and was planning to board a bus to Chhindwada in Madhya Pradesh when RPF’s ‘Special Crime Detection Squad’ managed to nab him upon suspicion. The special anti-narcotics sniffer canine squad too was summoned. RPF sources said the sniffer canine confirmed some ‘ganja-like’ smell inside the bag which made it bark in affirmative. The two bags had few ‘brown plastic’ wrapped materials which too appeared like the ones in which such contraband are transported.A senior officer of RPF said the ganja are being transported in such brown plastic wrapped packets. “We did not open the packets after the sniffer canine barked affirmatively. It was after the arrival of the sub-divisional magistrate that the matter came to fore,” he said.It was also reliably learnt that the man in question had ferried ganja once in the past. “This consignment was handed over to him inside the coach where he made the payments too. He too was stunned to see the pebbles and stones inside the packets after which he admitted to have been duped by the one who supplied the consignment at Vishashapatnam railway station,” said the official.
