Nagpur: Central Railway trackman Kamlesh Chadokar, in his 30s, had learnt the first lesson of safety at his work from none other than his father Guntu, who had served the department in the same capacity for over three decades. On Friday, however, eluded Kamlesh, who was run over while serving water to his colleagues engaged in working on the tracks near Somalwada railway crossing gate.Kamlesh, married in June this year, was run over by Bengaluru-bound Rajdhani Express. He failed to notice the oncoming train and also his colleagues waving desperately to attract his attention. The victim’s body was dragged for around 50 meters under the train with the limbs and torso getting severed said eyewitnesses. Kamlesh joined service as a trackman in November 2016. His elder brother Krishnarao works with the ordnance factory.Kamlesh’s father Guntu, who had taken voluntary retirement from service to help Kamlesh get the job, blamed destiny for the...
incident. “Apart from sharing my own experiences and also stories about the risks at work, my son had undergone formal training too before and after joining service. The margin for mistake is almost negligible in the work of the trackmen,” he said. “It is sometimes quite confusing to understand on which track the train is coming if there are two running parallel,” said the grieving father.Tarachand Tumram, mukadam (in-charge) of the trackmen, said Kamlesh was part of the team working on a stretch of over a kilometre. “There were smaller groups of two-three trackmen at regular distance engaged in different tasks. Kamlesh was entrusted with the responsibility of serving water to his toiling colleagues,” he said. One his colleagues, who was also part of the team, said the other had raised an alarm on noticing that Kamlesh was oblivious of the oncoming train. “The loco-driver too had honked but Kamlesh remained on the track,” said the colleague. The body of the victim was sent to Government Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where the post mortem was conducted later in the day. Beltarodi police have registered a case of accidental death.

We may expect this to end as well, eventually, as the Govt. tightens these controls further. At IRI, we CANNOT waste any more time on this fruitless...
