CHENNAI: In a bid to revive the monorail project, the housing and urban development department has directed a consultant to study the route between Velachery and Vandular and its alignment with the upcoming elevated corridor linking Chennai airport and Chengalpet. The move comes after the government had put the project on hold a few months ago.Sources in the department said the consultant would explore the alignment of the line where the monorail will interconnect with the elevated corridor.“The monorail corridor will have an interface with the elevated corridor at Tambaram which the consultant will identify,” an official said. The state transport department had envisaged the project on two routes: Kathipara-Poonamallee and Velachery-Vandalur in 2012. While the Union urban affairs ministry had accorded in-principle approval to the Kathipara-Poonamallee route covering 20km, the 22km-long Vandalur-Velachery corridor was planned under multilateral funding at an estimated Rs 3,135.63cr. The Poonamallee–Kathipara route with a link between Porur...
and Vadapalani was explored under public private partnership at an estimated Rs 3,267cr. Sources said the consultant would look into the entire Velachery-Vandalur route that would run through Medavakkam and Pallikaranai. “Executing it is a policy decision of the government. But the objective is for the future because the exact location of the alignment would be required,” a housing and urban development official said. But urban transportation experts said the monorail, considered an appealing modernistic transport solution, is unsustainable owing to the huge investment it entails for limited passenger capacity. “Owing to the complicated physical infrastructure, most monorail systems across the world are short-length point-to-point corridors with a distance of hardly 20km like in Mumbai where the daily ridership is only 19,000,” said Nashwa Naushad, associate, urban development, at Institute for Transportation and Development Policy. When the state government was working on the metro rail project, there were plans that the monorail could be constructed as a feeder line linking small neighbourhoods with metro rail. But it did not take off and metro rail is promoting feeder buses, share autos and cabs to help people access its stations.Nashwa said developing the bus network would improve connectivity and serve more people, especially when coupled with the suburban network, metro rail and MTC fleet.“Investments in a dedicated bus rapid transit network would prove more sustainable since a BRT corridor requires only aboutmbaram Rs 12 crore per kilometer to transport about 45,000 passengers per hour per direction, while about Rs 80 crore per kilometre would be required for a monorail whose capacity is generally limited to 8,000,” she said.
