Chennai: If you are one of the thousands of season ticket users opting for a shorter journey between stations on two separate suburban corridors linked through Chennai Beach station, be wary of the railway ticket collector as you could be violating rules. Commuters who get down at Central and take a train again from Park station bend rules if not violate it, according to a RTI response.Southern Railway’s response to a Right to Information (RTI) application on December 6 indicates that the railway ticket collector is well within his rights to penalise you as your journey is, in the strictest terms, against the rules. Prasan Chand Khariwal, of Tiruvallur, filed an RTI with Southern Railway to know if commuters who held season tickets for travel on a longer route were allowed to travel on a shorter one. For instance, many people travel from Tiruvallur on the south-western line to Tambaram or...
Chengalpet and hold season tickets for travel through Chennai Beach. However, since the frequency of trains through Chennai Central is higher, they break the journey at Central, cross the Poonamalee High Road and take a train to Tambaram from Park station on the southern corridor. The commercial wing of Southern Railway replied stating that a journey through shorter routes was allowed only if there was no break in their journey — making the Central-Park stations switch wrong.TOI spoke to senior officials in the commercial wing who confirmed that as per rules, commuters breaking journey at Central and crossing over to Park line were liable to be penalised by ticket collectors.“This is a rule mandated by the Railway Board across India. Southern Railway has written to the board asking to modify the rule in light of the unique situation of Chennai division,” a senior official said. The official is not authorised to speak to the press and hence requested anonymity. The department has, however, asked ticket collectors not to penalise the commuters.Chennai divisional rail users consultative committee (DRUCC) member K Baskar said this rule was illogical as the passenger was already paying more and it could not be a loss for railways if he/she travels through the shorter route. “There is no track available between Chennai Central and Park. Obviously commuters would have to break their journey,” Baskar said.Though this rule was not known to many ticket checkers and there was no reported instance of commuters being penalised, the RTI reply has generated some fear among residents in his friends’ circle, Baskar said.Baskar has raised the issue to senior railway officials asking for a mutually beneficial solution to this.
