Severe water shortage in the city has not spared even
South Western Railway (SWR), particularly the Bengaluru division.
With borewells at several stations drying up and inadequate supply from
Bangalore Water Supply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB), the railways is

managing with minimal supply. Railways mainly requires water for
passengers at stations and on trains. In addition to this, water is also
needed for cleaning of coaches, platforms and staff quarters.
Officials said potable water is being supplied for usage of passengers and
staff, while recycled water is being used for cleaning the coaches,
platforms, tracks, toilets, station premises and gardening.
For instance, Yeshwantpur, which is the second busiest station in the city and the railway quarters there require 25 lakh litres of
water a day. However, BWSSB supplies only 15 lakh litres a day and the railways is tapping borewells (4 lakh litres a day) and
recycling (2 lakh a day) for meeting the rest of the demand. This means there is a shortage of 4 lakh litres a day. SWR officials
said they have asked BWSSB to supply an additional 4 lakh litres a day to Yeshwantpur, but there has been no response yet.
Stations like Yelahanka and Banaswadi are also facing a water crisis. For instance, Udyan Express (11302), which was supposed
to leave at 9:20pm on March 1 from Yelahanka, was rescheduled to March 2 at 12:30am as low water pressure resulted in slow
filling of water into coaches
At Banaswadi too, trains like Banaswadi-Kochuveli Humsafar and Banaswadi-Kannur, Banaswadi-Ernakulam Superfast
Express/Bi-weekly have been delayed due to the water shortage. In fact, passengers waiting for trains at Banaswadi were also
affected.
When contacted, senior divisional engineer (constructions) RK Singh said they are now facing water shortage primarily at
Yeshwantpur and have resolved issues at other stations like Yelahanka and Banaswadi. “In Yeshwantpur, we are planning to
increase the capacity of recycling plant from 2 to 4 lakh litres and also to drill some more borewells. In KSR City Railway Station,
we are planning to set up a recycling plant with a capacity of five lakh litres”.
On an average a coach has four tanks with a total capacity of 1,800 litres and a 24-car train will have a capacity of about 43,200
litres of water before commencing the journey, mainly for flushing of toilet and hand-washing (25 litres per person during the
day). There are also several complaints about inadequate water in coaches on long-distance trains, which is normally filled
every 300-400km.
