New Delhi: Travelling daily from Delhi to Palwal, Ballabgarh, Ghaziabad, Faridabad will soon get a lot easier for those taking Electric Multiple Unit (EMU) trains. The northern railway plans to bring out newer train models, equipped with CCTV cameras, attached toilets and more seating on these routes, an official said.EMU, DEMU and DMU trains ply daily in NCR and are used by thousands of commuters every morning and evening.RN Singh, divisional railway manager (DRM), Delhi Division, said the concern of women safety has been addressed with these new trains and other features, which are missing in the current fleet, were also looked at.“Toilets were initially missing in the EMUs plying in NCR. We had to retrofit them. However, the new trains will have them pre-attached. More seats will also be added along with LED lights,” he said.Railways had recently increased security in local trains; however, the problem of men entering all-women...

trains persists. Currently, only a few trains running locally have dedicated RPF personnel, also leaving it vulnerable to snatching.“For a womens’ coach, we could deploy RPF personnel, but for ladies special trains we have been unable to curb the problem effectively as men keep switching coaches. The use of CCTV cameras will bolster security and provide visuals of violators,” Singh added.According to officials, each coach will have 110 seats and a GPS-based navigational system. A total of 323 passenger trains run from the capital to Palwal, Ghaziabad, Mathura and Meerut. These include 109 EMUs, 59 mainline electric multiple units (MEMU), 34 diesel multiple units (DMU) and 121 ordinary passenger ones. A ticket for a 30km journey costs just Rs 10. The maximum one has to pay is Rs 35 for a 165km trip. “The acceleration and de-acceleration is smoother in these train as was found during testing. The newer features like GPS positioning will also provide real-time updates to us and the passengers,” said a senior railway official said. The trains are likely to be added in a phased-manner in Ghaziabad, Palwal and Faridabad sections.Officials said the new trains are likely to reduce the travel time as they are capable of reaching 110 km/hr. “We have carried out a few trial runs, and more testing needs to be done before they can be put on tracks. We are currently deciding when to make them operational,” said an official.
