Passengers had complained that it is difficult to board the train on time during rush hoursDaily commuters of the Deccan Queen can finally let out a sigh of relief as the Central Railway authorities have given in to their demand of plying the train from platform No.1 instead of platform No.5. The same has been done against the backdrop of several complaints made by these frequent passengers about the struggle they have to go through every morning to reach platform No.5.According to the railway authorities, the train was diverted to platform No.5 due to congestion and preference being given to long-distance trains which comparatively have more carriages.Deccan Queen, the well-liked train which travels between Pune and Mumbai, will now be departing from the same platform, which it did 90 years ago, from June 1. This benefits daily passengers who can save the hassle of crossing the footbridge as platform No.1 is...
closest to the main gate of the Pune railway station.Umesh Kane, a daily commuter of the train, said, “For the past 80-plus years the train would run from the platform No.1 which is convenient when one is entering the railway station from the main gate. I am 52 years old now and have been travelling by this train for over 25 years and it is indeed difficult for most of us to manage to reach the platform in time during the early morning rush hours.”Another passenger, Manodnya Sapre, added, “It has become difficult for us to manage our time, as many of us would take a bus that dropped us near the railway station just a few minutes before the train’s departure. At times it used to be difficult to board the train if the bus schedule was disturbed. It became worse when we had to climb the foot overbridge and reach the platform No.5 all the way. We had requested the station manager right after the changes were made and are glad that after so many requests the train is back on its original platform.”The authorities withdrew the decision after in sight of requests from the passengers and have formulated alternative plans for other trains that arrived or departed the station around the same time as the Deccan Queen, that is around 7.15 am.Milind Deouskar, divisional railway manager (DRM), said, “The management was looking at alternative options to bring the Deccan Queen back on its original platform as demanded by the passengers. We have made alternative provisions to reduce congestion and the train will depart from platform No.1 June onwards.” For the past 80-plus years the train would run from platform No.1 which is convenient when one is entering the railway station from the main gate—Umesh Kane, a daily commuter
