MANGALURU: Presence of mind of a woman passenger, travelling onboard the Hazrath Nizamuddin-Ernakulam Mangala Lakshadweep Superfast Express (Train 12618), averted a major fire mishap in an AC compartment. The incident happened near Kundapur Railway Station in the wee hours of Sunday.
According to Railway officials, a woman passenger who was getting ready to get down at Kundapur Railway Station noticed fire bellowing from AC compartment of the running train. However, apart from her, no one else noticed the fire since all were asleep. She immediately informed all the passengers as well as alerted railway officials. Passengers used Alarm Chain Pulling (ACP) to stop the train.

to Sudha Krishnamurthy, Public Relation Manager, Konkan Railway Corporation, the train was made to stop after about a kilometre after Bijur Station at 1.18 am and was hauled back to Bijur. The fire was extinguished at Bijur, she said.
Meanwhile, KRCL's accident relief medical van was dispatched from Verna in Goa towards Bijur even as the deputy chief medical officer of KRCL at Udupi was also sent to attend to medical emergencies, if any. However, no one was injured in the incident, said Sudha.
As the train moved towards Mangaluru, it was decided to detach the affected coach, B4, at Senapura Station. KRCL authorities communicated to their Southern Railway counterparts to arrange another B4 coach at Mangaluru Junction and the train left Senapura at 5.30 am, leaving behind the affected coach.
Monitoring
Immediately after learning of the incident, KRCL's Director (Operations) Haridas D Gujarati rushed to the control room at KRCL's headquarters with heads of operation, electrical, mechanical and safety departments. The senior officials monitored the rescue operations and guided the executives from Mangaluru, Karwar and Goa, who had rushed to the spot, added Krishnamurthy.
.
Train 12618 leaves Hazrath Nizamuddin at 9.15 am every day to reach Ernakulam Junction at 10.30 am the third day via Agra, Bhopal, Panvel, Madgaon and Mangaluru Junction. It has 23 coaches in all, including three 2-Tier AC coaches, four 3-Tier AC coaches, 11 second class sleeper coaches, two each unreserved and luggage-cum-brake van coaches and one pantry car. B4 coach was the sixth coach from the Loco (engine).
