MUMBAI: A railway ticket booking scam has come to the fore during the peak holiday season. Western Railway officials found 59 tatkal tickets costing Rs 2.40 lakh being booked by touts in a "fishy and fraudulent" manner just a day before the date of journey.
The tickets were then sent to Mumbai by air such that they reached just in time for passengers in Mumbai to board the outstation trains.
These tickets were, of course, sold at exorbitant rates. Most tickets were for Godan Express, Saket Express besides others which ply up north.
Most tatkal tickets were booked over the counter in Delhi, Varanasi, Kolkata, Raipur and Patna and sent to Mumbai by flight.
The racket came to light during a raid at the domestic airport's cargo hub at Santacruz by chief vigilance inspectors.
As a rule, tatkal tickets can be booked 24 hours before the date of journey. A source in the railways said it was "intriguing" that the tickets sent by air were booked in northern cities and were meant for travel in less than 24 hours. "Usually, tatkal tickets are booked from a city where the journey is to start," said the source.
The tickets were then couriered to Mumbai. "They were being sold at premium rates-anywhere between 5,000 and 10,000," said the source. Three men-Gaurav Singh , Manoj Katkar and Ranjit Saroj-have be en arrested.
At least 59 tatkal tickets worth Rs 2.40 lakh were booked just 24 hours prior to the journey and then sent by air to be sold to passengers in Mumbai just in time to travel
