Vadodara: Vadodara got its first satellite railway station on Saturday when Suresh Angadi, minister of state for railways, dedicated the newly constructed Chhayapuri satellite railway station building to the nation.
Constructed at a cost of Rs50 crore, Chhayapuri railway station has two full length platforms for 26 coach trains and two loop lines and two main lines. The foot-over-bridge at the station is 6m wide while there are two lifts, one on each platform.
But commuters will be spending more time catching trains or returning back from the railway station as the satellite
railway station is located 9km away from Vadodara railway station.
From December 17, 26 trains as 13 pairs of trains will not touch Vadodara railway station. Instead, they will get diverted from Chhayapuri.
While commuters will spend more time in reaching and returning from the satellite railway station, the travel time inside the trains however will reduce. Trains on Ahmedabad-Ratlam line and vice versa will not be required to undergo reversal at Vadodara junction which will save around 27 minutes per train and ease Vadodara station of congestion, railway officials said.
Officials said with the beginning of the satellite railway station, train punctuality will improve and more trains on these routes will be introduced.
Vadodara railway station presently witnesses a daily movement of over 200 trains.
“It will also free four critical paths at Vadodara station improving mobility and punctuality. At the same time, loco movement to and from shed will reduce resulting in decongestion at Vadodara station,” they said.
Apart from reduction in vehicular traffic congestion around Vadodara railway station, the satellite station will help in expansion of the city and reduce congestion in city centre, the officials said.
Chhayapuri will be a new non suburban group-4 class station in Vadodara area. The officials are also expecting reduction in vehicular traffic congestion around Vadodara railway station.
The diversion of these trains will reduce requirements of shunters at Vadodara resulting in increase in crew availability for freight trains. At the same time, it will reduce the requirement of shunting gang at Vadodara which will be deployed to fill up critical vacancies in Group D, an official said.
