Doubling of 2 important stretches of Baiyappanahalli - Hosur and Yeshwanthpur - Channasandra will have to wait till suburban rail project gets the nod from CentreWith the Suburban Rail system for Bengaluru yet to get a clearance from the Centre, the proposed doubling of two important railway lines — the 48-km Baiyappanahalli - Hosur stretch and the 21-km Yeshwanthpur - Channasandra stretch — hangs in the balance. The completion of these two projects could have drastically improved rail infrastructure until the Rs 18,000-crore suburban rail system is ready. As the 48-km and 21-km single lanes criss-cross several prominent railway junctions such as Baiyappanahalli, Banaswadi and Yeshwanthpur, it affects train movements across all lines. It also inconveniences several commuters, especially the office-goers, as the waiting time at these junctions shoots up without any warning. The Karnataka Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (K-RIDE) — which is implementing the 148-km suburban rail project — had taken...
up the responsibility of doubling two railway lines early this year. But there has been no headway since then. These two projects — which pass through high-density corridors including IT hubs — were originally with the South Western Railway (SWR). Railway users fear that the K-RIDE would follow the schedule of proposed suburban rail system for the completion of the two railway lines. Although the publicly announced deadline for the 148-km suburban rail system is five years, officials maintain that it would take at least 10 years to complete the project. “On the other hand, doubling of railway line, if taken up separately, can be completed in 3-4 years.”Once the Centre clears the project, the completion of suburban rail project will have several hurdles to clear, most of which are time-consuming. The K-RIDE has to set up a team of officials, raise 60% of the Rs 18,000 crore from long-term lenders and the construction phase. Managing Director of K-RIDE Amit Garg said the utility would fast track the doubling project once it gets approval from the Centre. “We can start 40% of the work from the funds received from the State and Central government. In the next two years, we will also raise funds from other sources,” he said. The doubling project, he said, requires a total of Rs 1,000 crore. Sanjeev Dyamannavar, who is campaigning for the upgradation of rail infrastructure in Bengaluru, said the two doubling projects would have helped a large population of office-goers as it criss-crosses several important landmarks of Bengaluru. “The K-RIDE has to set up an office, raise funds and start the work. All of it is going to take a lot of time. We are still talking of doubling of railway lines while cities such as Mumbai and Chennai have multiple railway lines for the suburban passengers,” he said.
