Nagpur: Responding to sharp criticism from passengers and people’s representatives, Central Railway rolled back its decision to operate 12289-90 Nagpur-Mumbai-Nagpur Duronto Express from Ajni. The train will again operate from home platform at Nagpur station.
TOI on Wednesday had reported on the plight of passengers owing to lack of facilities at Ajni railway station. The train was shifted just because of operational convenience. The railway had to shunt the train from home platform to Ajni coaching complex where it is maintained.
Nagpur division of Central Railway said in a release on Wednesday that
from Thursday (February 20), the 12290 Nagpur-Mumbai Duronto will leave from Platform 8 (home platform) while 12289 Mumbai-Nagpur train leaving from CSMT on February 20 will also terminate at Nagpur.
In a note to Central Railway DRM here, the chief passenger traffic manager (CPTM), Mumbai, said, “As passengers are facing inconvenience due to work on lift and escalator, train should be shifted to Ajni.”
“The reason mentioned in CPTM note seems frivolous. The work on installing lift and escalator is in no way a hurdle to passengers. It is the lack of proper facilities at Ajni station that bother them,” said Brijbhushan Shukla of Rail Yatri Sangh.
“This means Duronto was deliberately shifted from home platform to Ajni under the garb of washable apron work on Platform 1. There was no need to shift the train to Ajni as it has been running smoothly for a decade. If at all Ajni needs to be developed, the railways should start giving a 2-minute stoppage to important trains like Duronto here and develop amenities,” Shukla adds.
From the CPTM communication, it appears that Central Railway may restart Duronto and other passenger train operations from Ajni after work on lift and escalator is completed. The work on both is expected to be over by March. The reason doesn’t hold water as the time when Duronto departs is night time when construction activity is stalled, experts said.
Basant Kumar Shukla, general secretary of passenger rail users’ body Bharatiya Yatri Kendra (BYK), said, “The problem is not with Duronto alone. There is same experience with other trains like Ajni-Pune, Hamsafar express and others. Unless Ajni station is redeveloped by expanding it, the problem will persist.”
Former Congress corporator Tanveer Ahmed pushed for reopening one of the operational yard lines on the east side of the station for operating Duronto. Already freight trains are being moved from this side now. This line was used by the railways long ago.”
Reacting to Central Railway faux pas, Vilas Ramteke, professor with Sir JJ College of Architecture, Mumbai, who belongs to Nagpur, said, “Setting up a lift and an escalator will be a partial relief. Quick accessibility to the station is a big issue with Ajni. I stay in North Nagpur and it is easy to approach home platform. There may be many like me facing similar problem if train is operated from Ajni.”
“I welcome CR’s decision to shift the train back, which is well connected to MP and Maharashtra bus stands. Many passengers across the region travel by Duronto. When railways spent crores on home platform, why shouldn’t it be utilized for benefit of passengers,” asked Tushar Patil, an executive working in Mumbai but originally from Nagpur.
From February 9, Nagpur division of Central Railway suddenly started operating the train from Ajni for three months. Prior to this, the train was temporarily shifted to Ajni from January 8 till February 8, citing work on washable apron on Platform 1. Railway sources said the plan was to to permanently shift Duronto to Ajni
