While there is public outcry
simmering over the delay in
commencement of works
even after one year of
announcement of new railway
zone,

the South Coast Railway
(SCoR) with headquarters in
Vizag, the Andhra Pradesh
government is yet to handover
the land where the railways
has planned to construct the
zonal headquarter office.
In a land exchange understanding with the State government, the railways gave 52
acres parcel at Mudasarlova in
the city. The railways had
allowed various construction
projects, including the Telugu
Talli flyover of the government, on its land. Hence, in
2013, the State government
had assured the railways to
provide the land in
Mudasarlova. However, the
revenue record is yet to reflect
the transfer of the land from
AP government to railways.
During a meeting of stakeholders conducted in the city
on Thursday to finalise the
new Tourism Policy (2020-
25), Minister for Tourism
Muttamsetti Srinivasa Rao,
who chaired the meeting,
urged the Waltair Railway
Division, ADRM, Akshay
Saxena, to commence the
work for setting up of the new
railway zone at the earliest.
The ADRM told the minister that the funds have been
sanctioned for the new railway zone, hence, the works
would begin soon. However,
they are waiting for the land
promised to the railways in
Mudasarlova to be handed
over officially so as to start
any construction works there.
Around 20 acres of the 52
acres land parcel is yet to be
acquired by the administration here.
An agreement for transfer
of land was signed on January
12, 2016. However, the change
in ownership in favour of
railways is yet to reflect on the
revenue records. The matter is
being pursued," said the official. The railways seems to
have been planning to build
SCoR headquarters at either
Wireless Colony, which is
only one km from the railway
station and another is
Mudasarlova, as it is a lush
green area with little pollution. However, the statement
of the ADRM on Thursday,
hints that Mudasarlova may
house the SCoR zonal headquarter office. The new zonal
office will reportedly accommodate two conference halls,
chambers for the general
manager and assistant general manager of Disaster
Management Centre, a library,
a canteen, and an auditorium.
The Central government
in February 2019 had
announced that a railway
zone in Andhra Pradesh will
be implemented with Vizag as
its headquarters. The zone
will be named as the South
Coast Railway (SCoR). It will
comprise the existing
Guntakal, Guntur, and
Vijayawada Divisions.
Furthermore, the Waltair division will be divided into two
parts. One part will be incorporated in the new
South Coast Railway
(SCoR) and the other will be
converted into a New Division
under East Coast Railway
in Odisha.
