New Delhi: As Coronavirus cases in India are increasing, to minimise the footfalls at railway stations across the country, Indian Railways has increased prices of platform tickets from Rs 10 to Rs 50. Also, after removing blankets and curtains from AC coaches, the national transporter has directed its officials and IRCTC to not allow persons with fever, cough to be involved in
food handling. 
Railways Principal Chief Commercial Managers and the Managing Director of the IRCTC, Phillip Varghese, Director Tourism and Catering Railway Board, said, "No staff having symptoms such as fever, cough, running nose or difficulty in breathing should be deployed in the business of food handling." A lot of people are cancelling their tickets in order to avoid travelling at the moment.
Surge in ticket cancellations:
The Railways have been seeing a surge in cancellations on their long-distance passenger trains over the past week, mirroring the increase in the cases of novel coronavirus infection in the country. Both Central Railway (CR) and Western Railway (WR) have seen a spike in cancellations. As per CR officials, on March 12, out of the 65,943 tickets booked on CR, 22,441 were cancelled, amounting to Rs 110.27 lakh in refunds. The cancellation rate on March 12 was 34.03%, much higher than the average rate of around 14%.
Train ticket cancellation charges:
E-tickets can be cancelled via the IRCTC website by paying a cancellation charge according to respective train classes. The cancellation fee is charged per passenger and there won’t be any refund for the confirmed tatkal train ticket cancellation.
Note that IRCTC doesn’t entertain any refund of fare on RAC e-tickets in case the ticket is not cancelled or TDR not filed online up to thirty minutes before the scheduled departure of the train. IRCTC levies 25 per cent of the fare as the cancellation charge subject to a minimum amount fixed for every class if a confirmed ticket is cancelled within 48 hours and up to 12 hours before the scheduled departure of the train. The ticket cancellation fee escalates to 50 per cent of the fare if a confirmed ticket is cancelled less than 12 hours and up to four hours before the scheduled departure of the train.
According to the latest IRCTC guidelines, a fee of Rs 240 is levied for AC first class/executive class cancellation, Rs 200 for AC 2 tier/first class, Rs 180 for AC 3 tier/AC chair car/ AC 3 economy, Rs 120 for sleeper class and Rs 60 for the second class as the flat cancellation charge if a confirmed ticket is cancelled more than 48 hrs before the scheduled departure of the train. The chart preparation time is the time for the chart preparation from the train originating station or from the previous chart preparation station, IRCTC said.
How to cancel ticket: Confirmed E-Tickets can be cancelled/TDR filed up to 4 hours before the scheduled departure of the train and Partly waitlisted/RAC tickets can be cancelled/TDR filed up to 30 minutes before the scheduled departure time of the train.
