offices and stations, Nagpur division of Central Railway and South East Central Railway (SECR) will go for wind energy use at Ajni and Motibagh. This energy will be used for non-traction purposes.
The Central Railway has explored wind energy as renewable energy source in a big way under the aegis of Railway Energy Management Company Limited (REMCL), a joint venture of Indian Railways and RITES by way of power purchase agreement (PPA) with wind power developers.

Colonel Bahadur Singh of Jodhpur Lancers received the Order of British India for displaying exemplary courage during the First World War.
Wind mills aggregating 50.4MW have been installed at Sangli for traction purposes while 6MW have been installed for non-traction purposes.
Railway officials said, of the 6MW wind energy generated at Sangli, 5MW will be utilized by Central Railway. At Ajni 1MW will be used for residential colony, offices and other installations while 1MW will be used by Motibagh workshop.
“The energy generated will be put in the MSETCL grids. A special energy meter has been installed at the project site in Sangli and at Ajni Colony. The state power company will supply power through the grid. The wind energy will save huge money on power bills,” said officials.
“The project will be commissioned soon as we are awaiting NOC from MSEDCL,” they added.
The energy generated is delivered at the withdrawal points of Central Railway under the open access regulations. In this, power is injected at any given point in the power grid and drawn at any other point by paying the wheeling charges to the power transmission utilities.
“So far, 67.76 million units energy has been received, which has yielded a saving of Rs39 crore. For non-traction, a PPA has been signed with wind power developers for a capacity of 6MW. It will save around Rs4.2 crore yearly when commissioned,” they said.
“Central Railway is going in a big way for environment-friendly renewable energy such as solar and wind energy through open access and net metering in order to bring down the cost of energy pursuant to ministry of railways’ policy,” says chief public relations officer (CPRO) Shivaji Sutar.
“Central Railway is going for solar energy of both roof top configuration as well as land-based, and wind power, to go completely green by 2030 to combat climate change by minimizing carbon footprints and to mitigate global warming,” he adds.
Central Railway has planned for rooftop solar power plants aggregating 14.379 MWP (mega-watt peak) capacity spread over its 5 divisions and 4 workshops.
Out of that, 4.92 MWP has been installed and commissioned on the cover over platforms at various railway stations and various car sheds, workshops and administrative buildings.
“These installations are generating 6.4 million units (MU) of energy per year resulting in a saving of Rs4.1 crore per annum. Rest of the solar power plants are in various stages of installation which upon commissioning will yield 12.43 MU which will save Rs7.37 crore annually,” Sutar said.
Central Railway has identified vacant trackside stretches as well as the unutilized land parcels for setting up land based solar power plants aggregating a capacity of 109 MWP for traction purposes.
These solar power plants will generate 143 MU energy per year. This will save R 43 crore in energy bills per annum. Similarly, for non-traction purposes, vacant land parcels have been identified in various premises on which solar power plants of aggregate 71 MWP capacity have been planned which will generate 93 MU energy per year and yield a saving of Rs64 crore per annum. Thus, overall savings in energy bills per annum will be to tune of Rs107 crore.
