I think train was originally proposed to run via MYS only. At that time I think MYS div had some constraints and later on for some strange reasons, it got diverted Via PGT. Train uses the rake of YPR-Lucknow Express and due to constraints at YPR, cannot keep the rake at their end hence using the extra day/time to run this service to MAQ. It is correct that that this train doesn't serve any purpose except for an overnite option between YPR to Erode, Salem, CBE or PGT on Sundays
I have another suggestion:
Start at YPR go via Mysore to MAQ and then to Kozhikode. YPR 2200 MYS 0100 MAQ 0900 CLT 1200.
Return CLT 1900 MAQ 2230 MYS 0630 YPR 1000.

Down train timings in MYS is odd timings. Timings can be changed at convinient timings.
The train was introduced via SR Palghat Kozhikode as SWR is not ready to provide slot in Hassan Mangaluru line during night due technical and safety issues. Even Bijapur Mangaluru is running because of ex minister of Railways Suresh Angadi. So unless SWR rethinks on the decision there is no possibility of train via Shiradi Ghats. Moreover if new slot is created better new triweekly/ daily should be introduced. This train is fit for nothing for Mangaluru and leave it as it is.
It can go via Mysore, even if it is at odd timings one way. Can act as additional night train.
Shiradi ghat can be crossed between 6 AM To 9 PM.
