Says proposed Thalassery-Mysuru line may turn out to be an ecological disaster
In a blow to the efforts of the Kerala government, the State Forest and Wildlife Department has strongly objected to the proposed Thalassery-Mysuru railway project citing serious ecological factors such as threats to endangered flora and fauna and sociological issues.

The area supported almost all species of animals found in the Western Ghats, including elephants, bison, tiger, leopard, wild dog, langurs and deer.
The Kannavam-Periya tract is known as a rare habitat of king cobra. Endangered species such as Malabar Ebony, Kulavu, Chora Pine and Jathi are in abundance here. So is the case with the Chandanachola region.
The Periya forest is also identified as one among the 18 Medicinal Plant Conservation Area of the Western Ghats, the sources said.
This forest is the connecting link of the largest elephant reserve in South India from the Mudumalai-Bandipur-Nilambur tract to the Bramhagiri Hills of Karnataka.

Once this forest is disturbed, the elephants will come down to human settlements of Nidumpoil and Edayar resulting in man-animal conflict in the zone.
In fact, five people had been killed in wild elephant attacks in this region in the past two or three years.
Besides, officials said the forest tract of the Western Ghats is a source of water for the rivers of north Kerala from Valapattanam to Mahe. More than three lakh people of Thalassery taluk depending on the Anjarakandi Puzha would be affected.
Also, 1,000-odd tribal families belonging to the Kurichiyar community live in the Kannavam forests in 33 settlements. They will be lose their livelihood, culture and traditional forest rights, the sources said.
A prominent project of the government on rail connectivity from north Kerala to Mysuru-Bengaluru is the Nilambur-Nanjangund line. Though this had been included in the Pink Book of Railways and Rs. 8 crore set apart for the detailed project report), the government has kept the project in abeyance following strong objection from the Karnataka Forest Department.
Feasibility survey
Instead, the government has opted to go ahead with the Thalassery-Mysuru line, the feasibility survey of which was also done by the Delhi Metro Rail Corporation, which has opined that this line is not viable.

തിരുവനന്തപുരം: തിരുവനന്തപുരം-കണ്ണൂര്‍ അതിവേഗ റെയില്‍ പാത നിര്‍മ്മാണത്തിനുള്ള കരട് റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ടിന് കേന്ദ്ര സര്‍ക്കാര്‍ അനുമതി നല്കി. സംസ്ഥാന സര്‍ക്കാരിനുവേണ്ടി ഡെല്‍ഹി മെട്രോ റെയില്‍ കോര്‍പ്പറേഷനാണ് സാദ്ധ്യതാ പഠനം നടത്തി റിപ്പോര്‍ട്ട് സമര്‍പ്പിച്ചത്. തിരുവനന്തപുരം മുതല്‍ കണ്ണൂര്‍ വരെ 430 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ ദൈര്‍ഘ്യമുള്ള അതിവേഗ റെയില്‍ ഇടനാഴിയ്ക്കാണ് പദ്ധതി. മണിക്കൂറില്‍ 300 മുതല്‍ 350 കിലോ മീറ്റര്‍ വേഗതയില്‍ സഞ്ചരിക്കാനാവുന്നതാണ് ഇത്. കണ്ണൂരില്‍ നിന്ന് തിരുവനന്തപുരത്ത്‌ എത്താന്‍ രണ്ടു മണിക്കൂര്‍ മതിയാവും. ഇപ്പോള്‍ ഇതിന് 12 മണിക്കൂര്‍ വേണം. 190 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ ദൂരം റെയില്‍പാത തറനിരപ്പില്‍ നിന്ന് ഉയര്‍ത്തിയും 146 കിലോമീറ്റര്‍ ഭൂഗര്‍ഭ പാതയായിട്ടും ആണ് നിര്‍മിക്കുക. വൈദ്യുതി ഉപയോഗിച്ചാണ് അതിവേഗ റെയില്‍ പ്രവര്‍ത്തിക്കുക. ഒമ്പതു സ്റ്റേഷനുകളാണ് ഈ അതിവേഗ പാതയില്‍ ഉണ്ടായിരിക്കുക. തിരുവനന്തപുരം, കൊല്ലം, ചെങ്ങന്നുര്‍, കോട്ടയം, കൊച്ചി, തൃശൂര്‍, വളാഞ്ചേരി, കോഴിക്കോട്, കണ്ണൂര്‍ എന്നിവയാണ് സ്റ്റേഷനുകള്‍. തിരുവനന്തപുരം കൊച്ചുവേളിക്കു സമീപമായിരിക്കും പ്രധാന ഡിപ്പോയും സ്റ്റേഷനും. ഇതിനായി ഏകദേശം 30 ഹെക്ടര്‍ സ്ഥലം ഏറ്റെടുക്കേണ്ടിവരുമെന്നാണ് കണക്കാക്കുന്നത്. ജനസാന്ദ്രത കുറഞ്ഞ പ്രദേശങ്ങളിലൂടെയായിരിക്കും റെയില്‍ പാത നിര്‍മിക്കുക. ഇതിനായി 20 മീറ്റര്‍ വീതിയില്‍ ഭൂമി ഏറ്റെടുക്കേണ്ടിവരും. ഈ ഭൂമിയുടെ 15 മീറ്റര്‍ ചുറ്റളവില്‍ കെട്ടിട നിര്‍മ്മാണങ്ങള്‍ പാടില്ല. എന്നാല്‍ കൃഷി ചെയ്യാം. കേന്ദ്ര - സംസ്ഥാന സര്‍ക്കാരുകള്സംയുക്തമായുള്ള പദ്ധതിയ്ക്കാണ് രൂപംകൊടുക്കുന്നത്. പദ്ധതി നടത്തിപ്പിനുള്ള വായ്പക്കായി ജപ്പാന്‍ ഇന്റര്‍ നാഷണല്‍ കോര്‍പ്പറേഷന്‍ ഏജന്‍സിയുമായി പ്രാഥമികചര്‍ച്ചകള്‍ നടത്തി

He said that the Shiradi Ghat stretch between Kukke Subrahmanya Road and Sakleshpur has the capacity to accommodate two more trains to fulfil the demand of the coastal region seeking the operation of more number of trains between Mangaluru and Bengaluru. Besides the train announced in the budget by the then Railway Minister D.V. Sadananda Gowda, he is demanding two more trains for passengers on the stretch, Mr. Kateel said.
Asked about the demand to extend the Mangaluru-Madgaon Intercity Express to Mumbai because of low patronage, the MP said that the issue is before the Railway Ministry and he is pursuing it. He said that rescheduling or re-routing the Kasargod-Mookambika Road Byndoor Passenger train due to low patronage is also on the cards and there is a demand to run it between Kukke Subrahmanya and Byndoor to facilitate pilgrims.
Mangaluru Division
Mr. Kateel reiterated the demand for the formation of a new Railway Division in Mangaluru, which is presently being served by three zones — Konkan Railway, South Western Railway and Southern Railway.
Southern Railway has only 13 km railroad length in Karnataka, he said and added that bringing Mangaluru region under Konkan Railway is not possible for technical reasons.
Hence, the creation of a new division under South Western Railway or bringing Mangaluru region under South Western Railway are the options left, he said.To a question on improving Mangaluru Central Railway Station, Divisional Railway Manager, Palakkad, Naresh Lalwani, said that tenders would be called for immediately to improve the second entrance on the Attavar side and build one more platform.
Line doubling between Central and Netravath Cabin would also be taken up immediately, he added.
The escalators have been installed at a cost of Rs. 2 crore to facilitate passengers to move from the main entry to Platform Nos. 2 and 3 with ease.
