Nov 02 2017 (10:58)   Oppose Bullet Train, Congress tells Maharashtra government

Entry# 2616140   News Entry# 321558         Tags   Past Edits
Mumbai: Terming the proposed Bullet Train project as yet “another bullet fired at the economy” by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the Congress’ Maharashtra unit on Wednesday asked the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party-Shiv Sena to oppose the project which will not benefit the state.
In a statement, Congress state President Ashok Chavan said when 40 percent of the existing seats on the Mumbai-Ahmedabad-Mumbai sector are going vacant, what is the need for the expensive Bullet Train project which will have serious repercussions for the economy and the people of the country.
He was referring
to RTI revelations to activist Anil Galgali pointing at the low occupancy on train seats on the Western Railway’s Mumbai-Ahmedabad-Mumbai sector which has caused a huge loss of nearly Rs 30 crore between July-September alone.
“Even earlier, the government has undermined the economy by demonetization and the implementation of Good & Services Tax (GST), and the Bullet Train proposal is an example of the wrong priorities of the government,” Chavan said.
He pointed out that to make the project viable, the Bullet Train would have to make at least 26 journeys on the sector with full capacity of 750 passengers, who would be required to cough out around Rs 3,500 per head.
Chavan said that with the current losses on this sector, the upcoming Bullet Train project would create a further mess of thousands of crores of rupees to the national economy and the Congress has already strongly opposed the project which will benefit Gujarat more than Maharashtra.

It’s been seventeen years. I was excited that after so many years I would be able to celebrate Diwali and Chhath with my family in Bihar. For a person from Bihar, the best way to celebrate Chhath is with their families.
My train was supposed to leave from Old Delhi railway station at 8.40 pm. Before leaving for the station, I checked the timing. To my utter shock, I found that the train has been rescheduled to 5.15 am, the next day.
Finally, the train could leave not before 10 am. Yes,
this is the state of the Indian railways. I could check the timings for I had access to technology. Many people came according to the original time and found themselves at a loss spending the night at the platform.
I could have still reached my place by next afternoon, but the train was getting delayed. The 20-hour journey extended to 36 hours. A whole day was wasted because the train refused to run on time.
The 36-hour journey was made difficult by the absence of a pantry car in the train. I tweeted to the railway minister and the reply was ‘Inconvenience is regretted’. After another 2-3 tweets, they said that the train would not be delayed further, but still it didn’t.
When I enquired about the delay of the train, they came up with two excuses. One, there were technical issues. Two, there was festive rush. So, Indian railways, were you not prepared for this rush?
One argument could be that due to festive rush special trains were announced which are further delaying the existing ones, but this is not a one-off incident. No matter from which part of country you are coming, journey to Bihar would always be delayed. It was not the first time either that someone tweeted about trains getting delayed by more than 20 hours. The fact is that if one checks the timings of the Bihar-bound trains, about 95% are late and that too by multiple hours.
The problem is further compounded by the absence of good public transport in Bihar. If people reach after 10 at night, then they have to wait for the morning. The auto drivers would charge triple the fare.
When bullet train was announced, people like me started thinking if that is needed in a country where in the absence of a basic infrastructure, people die in stampede at railway stations.
The fact is that we are talking about bullet trains in India that would run at a speed closer to 300km/hr when our existing trains are not running even on the normal speed. Can’t we inject the money that we are going to invest on the bullet trains on improving the present infrastructure? Can’t we make our railway network more efficient and time-bound? Every day millions of people travel to different parts of country and most of them are not reaching on time, and every time you hear the same line ‘Inconvenience is regretted’.

yes, I agreed. Bihar bound trains normally get delayed.. Not only Railway System local people are also responsible for such delays. Sometimes controls like Danapur div checks the patience of train on outer signal and sometimes people pulls chain at their village area. many things are required to be changed from both the sides. About Bullet train - Bullet train is self revenue generation independent project; this is not a part of Indian railway system; it is just a like a broad metro type project which runs in various cities. If the metro is required - bullet train is also required. 2nd thing- Indian railway is running in loss; If the money taken by Japan is invested here How this would be returned back? People started shouting even when 1 Rs in fare is increased. Hope DFC proejct will complete soon; will get some punctuality to Bihar.
