Sep 16 2016 (07:44)   Damaged tank bunds along GST Road a threat

Encroachments along the surplus courses and on the catchment areas have been left untouched.
The damaged tank bunds will continue to be a threat to road and rail traffic between Perungalathur and Chengalpattu, if this stretch were to receive heavy rain during the north-east monsoon this year. When the Kancheepuram district received heavy rainfall in November and December last year, several lakes, which had not been dredged for several years, along the eastern side of the Grand Southern Trunk Road between Perungalathur and Chengalpattu were filled to the brim.
This resulted in flooding
of residential localities along the flood drain channels and the catchment areas of these lakes. Several residential colonies such as the Mahalakshmi Nagar in Nandavaram-Guduvancheri and other colonies close to the channel of Nandivaram Esa lake on the western side of the GST Road were marooned.
The channel carried surplus water to Adhanur lake. From Adhanur lake, the excess water drains into the Adyar river near Perungalathur, said Mariappan, an octogenarian living in Nandivaram.
Encroaching the flood water channels as part of urbanisation resulted in the GST Road remaining under knee-deep water for more than 12 hours on December 3 last year.

Assisted by a few other train commuters, Rajesh Kannan Yadav is working towards making Urapakkam railway station a model facility
At the the Urapakkam railway station, a section of commuters takes a hardline on waste disposal. Anyone throwing away waste irresponsibly will be reprimanded by them and asked to throw the refuse in the dustbin.
These commuters are comrades of Rajesh Kannan Yadav, an environmental activist, who is on a mission to ensure the terminal is kept clean.
Minister Narendra Modi’s Swachh Bharat Mission inspired me to adopt the station. While I was working abroad as a supervisor at a multinational company, people there would call India an unclean and unhygienic. I came to Chennai, found accomodation in Chrompet, and was preparing for International English Language Testing System (IELTS). One day, I came on work to Urapakkam by train, and found the conditoon of the station to be appalling,” Yadav said.
“ I asked myself, ‘Why not clean the station?’ and approached the Southern Railway in this regard. The authorities were surprised that I wanted to clean the station premises single-handedly. They gave me the responsibility of maintaining the station for a month. Impressed with my work, they extended the responsibility for six months, and then another six months, and now, for a year.”
For Yadav, the day starts at 4 a.m. He walks up and down the station cleaning and removing the trash, and throwing it in the dustbins that he has funded from his earnings.
Apart from this, he has kept potted plants, painted the inner and outer walls of the ticket counter room, fixed benches, placed lamps outside the ticket counter room, beneath the foot-over-bridge and over the boards providing train timings and directions. The other works he has carried out include planting of saplings around the fence and covers washroom area. “ I scrapped the posters, washed and white-washed the walls of the counter room. The response from the commuters has been excellent. They warn the other commuters who spit and throw trash on the platforms. They even fought with a commuter for spitting paan,” he says.
G. Kaja Mynuddin, a commuter, praised Yadav for his efforts to improve consitions at the terminal.
“ He is working hard to make this a model station. Yadav is implementing the Swachh Bharat Mission, which is essential to keep our country clean. Though these commuters and I sensitise the other commuters not to spit and throw garbage, they continue to do so. I hope their attitude will change.”
He is appreciative of the gesture by the Loyola College to adopt the Nungambakkam railway station.
“It is a good move by the premier educational institution. The NGOs should come forward to adopt stations. Commuters are requesting me to start an NGO, and adopt more stations. My next responsibility includes giving a fresh coat of paint to the Chief Inspector Controller Room at the Station,” he says.
Rajesh Kannan Yadav can be contacted at 98402 83359.

Suburban electric train services between Tambaram and Chennai Beach, introduced many years before India gained Independence, may be the first fully electrified route, but even after several decades, the suburban Tambaram station is still plagued by a host of issues.
Lack of toilets for long-distance commuters, lack of connectivity from mainline platforms to suburban lines, and the need for additional walking space for commuters are some of the problems that the Tambaram station faces now. “Commuters feel that while Southern Railway takes pride in developing the western part of the railway station premises, east Tambaram has been given a raw deal.
Saravanan, a commuter from Rajakilpakkam, says that it is difficult to identify the station road from Velachery Main Road as not even a single signage can be seen from that end. Like many others, he says that Southern Railway earns a considerable amount of revenue by renting out its space to private companies that advertise through hoardings after due permission. “The station, catering to thousands of people and serving as one of the nerve centres of Chennai for decades, was recently spruced up and some repair work was carried out by Railways. But more must be done if it is to be developed as a third terminal after Chennai Central and Chennai Egmore, say commuters forums.

Sir this is not only the issue. I went to the toilet on the west side of tambaram using my regular suburban ticket. they refused saying that this has been changed to as sleeper class waiting hall and suburban passengers are not allowed. for nearly 10 years + i was using this facililty as suburban traveller but suddenly they have changed everything. my complaint in IR website was unanswered. the station master does not even know the problem. god save this station

Southern Railway has successfully expanded the facility of Paperless Ticket on Mobile which was inaugurated by the Hon’ble Railway Minister on the 22nd of April, 2015. This facility is now available for suburban ticket booking over the
entire network which extends from Chennai Beach to Gummidipoondi, Chennai Beach to Tiruvallur, Chennai Beach to Velachery and Chennai Beach to Chengalpattu. Passengers having the ùtsonmobile app’ on their smart phones will now be able to book their suburban journey tickets from any station to any station on the suburban network and carry the ticket on their phones.

Passengers who have booked suburban tickets through this app. must on demand show their tickets, available on their phones, to the ticket checking staff. Otherwise they will be treated as travelling without ticket. With this, the Mobile Ticketing Application is fully functional and will issue paperless tickets only. For more details on the application, please visit

Chennai is the first city to have this facility on Indian Railways and this is the first step towards the Hon’ble Railway Minister’s initiative of Òperation Five Minutes’.
