VISAKHAPATNAM: Spadework appears to have commenced for announcement of a separate railway zone for Andhra Pradesh in the ensuing Railway Budget scheduled to be presented in Parliament on February 25. Less than a month ago, Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu met Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu in New Delhi and submitted a representation seeking early creation of the new railway zone with Visakhapatnam as its headquarters.
Sources in the Railways have confirmed that estimates are being prepared for administrative costs, staff division, zonal jurisdiction and also evaluation of the assets. “Field-level study has begun in connection with the proposed railway zone. But we may not be submitting a report to the ministry before the introduction of the Railway Budget as it requires

a thorough study before finalising the broad contours for bifurcating the East Coast Railway (ECoR). We also need to consider the objections raised by the ECoR in this regard,” said highly placed sources.
The Railway authorities do not rule out a formal announcement by the minister during the presentation of the Railway Budget. The spadeworks are expected to be completed in 2016-17, followed by laying of a foundation stone for the new railway zone.
The separation of the Waltair division from the ECoR and formation of a new railway zone with Visakhapatnam as headquarters, has been a long pending demand. The same was assured during the state bifurcation as per the AP Reorganisation Act. Though there were apprehensions over Visakhapatnam as the headquarters, all the air has been cleared after the CM himself made an appeal to Suresh Prabhu in this regard.
Meanwhile, the Waltair division has proposed for introduction of three new express trains from Visakhapatnam to Varanasi, Bangalore and Howrah as part of the 2016-17 Budget. It has also sought diversion of four pairs of Express trains to Visakhapatnam instead of stoppage at Duvvada which include Howarah-Yesvantpur Duranto, Howrah-Yesvantpur AC, Howrah-Prashanti Nilayam and Kamakhya-Chennai.
Based on the representations from the people’s representatives, the Railway authorities also sought stoppage of Coromandel Express and Howrah-Kanyakumari Express at Vizianagaram besides proposing stoppage of 11 Express trains at Srikakulam Road station. Anakapalle MP Avanthi Srinivasa Rao has urged the South Central Railways to improve passenger amenities at Anakapalle and Yelamanchili stations besides opening reservation counters at Chodavaram and Madugula.
Status of 2015-16 Works
Works worth Rs 695 crore sanctioned for Waltair division in the previous Railway Budget
Survey and design for establishment of Wagon periodic overhaul (POH) workshop as well as the diesel locoshed and the electrical locoshed proposed in the previous budget, has been completed. However, the construction works are yet to commence.
Study has been completed and proposals prepared for the multi-purpose complex with multi-level parking at Visakhapatnam Railway station on the Gnanapuram side. Tenders are expected to be invited soon this year

Hyderabad: Commercial operations of Hyderabad Metro Rail’s first phase will start on June 2, on the occasion of Telangana Formation Day. The state government is trying its best to get Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the Metro Rail on the day.
Minister for municipal administration and urban development K.T. Rama Rao said on Thursday that all the required works, including tests and trials and certifications for the Metro, would be completed by then. The first phase includes Stage-1 from Nagole to Secunderabad railway station (about 9 km) under Corridor-III and stage-2 from Miyapur to SR Nagar (11.9 km) under Corridor-I.

total of 20 km will be opened up for commercial operations on June 2. In fact, the Nagole-Mettuguda stretch (8 km) was complete and was meant to commence operations on Ugadi 2015 but was put on hold as there would have been revenue losses.

Metro Rail section ready for months
The state government and L&T then decided to extend the stretch up to the Secunderabad railway station. Currently, works between Mettuguda and Secunderabad are on.
The Miyapur and SR Nagar stretch, including the Bharatnagar Rail overbridge, was completed in 2015 and trial runs were held last October. During a test run in December 2015, Mr Rama Rao had announced that these stretches would be opened in early 2016.
The stretches that will be operational from June 2 have been ready for months but were delayed owing to several reasons. At present, 72 km of Metro lines are being constructed in three different corridors in the twin cities.
Mr Rama Rao, while announcing the 100-day action plan for the city said, “The state government authorities are on the job to get Prime Minister Narendra Modi to inaugurate the first phase. Further details will be announced by the Chief Minister once we get the green signal from the Centre.”

“With the 100-day action plan we are putting the government up for public scrutiny. After 100 days another meeting will be held to give a report on the works promised in the action plan. That apart, in this month a day-long meet will be held at the Administrative Staff College of India on cleaning the Hussain-sagar. A team from Austria and Norway has presented a solution which is being looked into,” he said.

Less than a ten days after PM Narendra Modi flagged off Mahamana superfast express from Varanasi, the condition of the train is in ruins.
The swanky train is fully equipped with the modern facilities with dustbins and bio-toilets in every coach. The train also has new renovated and refurbished AC-coaches fitted with led screen.
However, in pictures taken from less than ten days, the train is left in a state of dirt and mess by passengers. As per pictures posted by Uttar Pradesh BJP's Twitter handle some facilities seem to be vandalised.
