when i see the time table of trains from chennai central, it is mentioned as Chennai Central(12), what does that 12 stands for?

Last sunday I travelled by this train from TEN to TBM. Train came to TEN on time and left TEN by 21.05 against 20.40. Train crawled through the stations and came to a halt at Tiruparamkundram. Three trains NCJ-MAS express, NCJ-SBC EXPRESS AND NCJ-CBE EXPRESSES were allowed to over take this train and it also waited for Madurai - Punalur passenger to cross, after all this the train reached Madurai almost 1hrs and 40 mins late. The AC coach attend told that this is a regular delay for this train as it has more slag time. Instead of waiting unnecessarily enroute, the timing can be delayed at the source station Tiruchendur by 90 minutes.
