All trains of IR are equiped with External Shoe brakes. The differnce is only on the method f activation. The method of activation is throgh linkage to the Piston in the Airdrum.
In Vaccumme brake system the spring loaded piston in the Aidrum is retracted against the spring, compressing the spring thus releasing the wheels free of the brake shoes. with no Vaccumme, the spring will be released which will excert pressure on the Brake shoes and bring the train to halt. The maximum force will be decided by...
more... the Aidrum diameter and atmosperic pressure, ie 1 ata.
In pressurised Aibrake compressed air at 7 to 8 ata, is pumped to the Airdrum which activates the Brake shoes and brings the train to halt. Here The maximum force will be decided by the Aidrum diameter and compressed airpressure, ie over 7 ata.
Thus the braking force in Compressed Air braking is aleast 7 times more than that of Vaccumme system
