Have confirmed tickets to travel from Pune to Chennai this weekend in First A/C, but tickets do not show berth numbers. When will berths be assigned ? Do I have to board the train before knowing the berth allotments.

The coach has only two 4 berth cabins and 1 2-berth coupe.
Train arrived in Pune 25 minutes ahead of schedule. Boarded the train after checking the reservation chart and as predicted by others, we're assigned a cabin. Cabin was neat, and the attendants had already distributed the bedrolls even before we had boarded. Upholstery was dark brown and berths appeared to be slightly broader than in 2nd ac.
Morning tea was served by the pantry attendant who also came back with breakfast at around 8am. Got a bread omelette and
idli/vada. Both were good. Idli was served with chutney which was so so. Lunch order was taken around 10 am. We ordered some veg Briyani.
After some time, the kids were getting bored just with watching the scenery outside. So, Just before lunch took them walking inside the train upto the pantry car. Looked like the food was being prepared in the pantry car itself. The daal was being packed in individual containers and it smelt good, made a mental note to order some when I saw our attendant. Returned to the cabin and lunch was served promptly at 12.30pm. Told the attendant bring two daal. He brought the daal chapatti portion, without the chapatti, which contained papad, dahi and water. I realised this because he charged me the price of daal chappati. Daal was quite good and we ate it with the food we had packed - some puris and lemon rice.
Got some samosa and cutlet for evening snacks. Cutlet was a bit salty while samosas had touch too much ginger.
The train was continously late. It stopped at kondapuram for water filling because the scheduled water fill at manthralayam did not occur due to lack of water at that station. Reached renigunta at 5.15pm, 25mins behind schedule. . Since the ha1 coach was just before the general compartment and you could see the vendors making a beeline towards that coach. Called one of the guys to get some masala chai was pleasantly surprised to get good quality tea cheaper than what was served onboard. Also got some boiled groundnuts. Left renigunta at 5.45pm only, 40 mins behind schedule. After this, I was clocking the train a 100/105kmph on my new Nokia lumia, which helped reach perambur just before 7.30pm. After it was slow progress until it Arrived at chennai egmore 20 mins late.
Most of the afternoon, the train was cruising at 100kmph tryin to make up time between station. It would make up some time and would promptly lose the gain to an unscheduled stop between stations.
Overall, the kids liked it, but the lack of foot traffic due to the closed cabin eventually got to them. But I did like the privacy of it.
Next time, have to try one of the rajdhanis...

You can't expect unreserved crowd to enter in to AC coaches since the interlinking pass thru will be closed...

Dadar to Chennai - the a/c compartments are at the back, with HA1 the last a/c before the general one. The vestibule to the general compartment is closed shut, so unreserved cannot enter the main bogies of the train.
Also, left out the couple of things from my last write up. The toilets were clean, I guess because of the regular cleanings. The cabins are supposed to be cleaned twice, once in the morn and once in the eve. but the cleaners showed up twice before lunch. So we had a bunch of trash after lunch that we could not dispose of and had to be left in the trash can (yes!!, there is one each cabin). The trash can
itself can be pushed out of sight below the counter just as you enter the cabin on each side. BTW, There is also a shelf just above one of the counters to keep your small luggage and also hang your shirts. In one of the stations (I think Guntakal), there was a cleaning crew on the platform cleaning the outside of the a/c windows - this is what I call progress, may be this could be carried over to the interior of the whole train...
To check the speed, go to Nokia Drive (beta). Once it locks on to the GPS, it will show the speed. Although the app kept putting us on the road next to the track (if there was one) since it has been designed as a driving app. there are also some apps available for ipad/iphone that can show you the speed. I downloaded one such app (free, but shows speed only in mph) for my ipad and the speeds between the two devices matched. Google maps on ipad are quite detailed showing tracks between cities. Nokia drive maps are not so detailed in "foresty" areas.

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
