Most important Rail station cum Terminal in Kolkata is Sealdah. It situates in middle Kolkata. Sealdah is the second largest Rail station after Howrah. 20 platforms exist in Sealdah. All the trains are so crowded as maximum hospitals ,College & Markets are very near to it. Sealdah is the busiest Rail station in India. 17 million passengers with valid ticket use it although 70 % passengers travel without ticket due to lack of TTE. Crowd of Local train in Sealdah division is like Western division of Mumbai suburban.Anybody can compare the crowd of Sealdah - Bongaon section with Mumbai Churchgate - Virar section & compare Mumbai CST - Kasara section with Sealdah - Ranaghat section.

Howrah is the largest Rail station in India. 22 active platforms exist in Howrah. Platform no 16 is closed. The trains Howrah bound are medium crowded as it is not in Kolkata. Although it is well connected with Kolkata by bus or cab. No direct train from Howrah to Kolkata. If anybody wants to travel comfortably with less crowd they can travel in Howrah division. 9 million passengers use it. 95 % passengers travel with valid ticket as ticket checking done frequently.
Kolkata Terminal is the newest terminal in north Kolkata. It is cleanest terminal in West Bengal. Only 5 platforms exist. More 2 platforms has been sanctioned.
Salimar is the most bad connected with Kolkata terminal. It is southern side of Howrah. only 2 platforms.
Satragachi is the average good connected terminal. Vidyasagar setu connectes with Kolkata. Only 5 platforms

Recently I visited Howrah station. I am surprised about the situation of this station. Station is very large, but management is very low. Howrah town is very inhygenic, dirty, uncleaned and vogus town.Traffic management is very poor. What a hail Howrah city is! Terminal in Mumbai is far better than Howrah.Mumbai CST has 18 platforms,Mumbai LTT has 12 platforms, that is why they are better one.Howrah containing 23 platform,I remark that huge 23 platform is the only reason for bad condition of Howrah.Follow Mumbai, make more terminals within 20 platform at differnt location.I heard from passengers that Kolkatan depend for long travelling only on Howrah.Other terminals are lame. Why?????I can not get answer.Hope anybody will answer

Dear Sir, I am not agree with u, Howrah is well connected with Kolkata with Bus, Taxi, (Prepaid & Post paid), Ac Volvo bus service, Ferry service and also you can walk through Howrah bridge. We have another two terminals at Kolkata one is Sealdah and other is Kolkata Terminus also Chitpur for International Train with Bangladesh. I am visited Mumbai, NDLS, DLI, I found that CSTM also same crowd as HWH. NDLS is so narrow, it is horrible to catch the train for HWH-NDLS Rajdhani. In howrah you can avail an kind of facilites offered b Indian Railway, like Big Display screen, restaurant, reservation counter, ATMs, Drinking water(Cold), Book stall, essential commodities for travel, Restiring room, Cbercafe, Two CAB road connected with two complex(Old & New) for Private Parking, Escalator and Scanning machine for security. After few years u will get Metro connection from HWH to Kolkata like New Delhi.

Hello Sunil,
I sympathise with your horrendous experience. But I disagree with your comparison. Howrah is not Mumbai or vise versa. Mumbai is the business capital and has its own standard where as Howrah has no such thing. Howrah dist is developed at its natual course. It was not a planned city. Mostly it had jute mills, fabrication and foundry shops. Low and middle class labour force use to home in the city majorly till late 90s. As the mills close down due to morder economy high rise concrete bldgs poped up which is occupied by some what rich people of Burra Bazar for its close proximity. So the population kept multiplying and the situation what you have described is the outcome

of this surge. God Vishwakrma also cannot make this city Mumbai. It is what it is. Now the Gov of West Bwngal is trying best to impoverished and make good some situation by starting Metro rail across Hugly river, fly over on posta, road upgrades around station. Also some rationalisation of trains dept HWH and other adjoining terminals. The situation will improve in next 2 to 3 years one can guess. But again we in India catching up with the development pace vs need and need always winning.
Howrah is a great place and means to people, it may be dirty filthy but still close to hearts like a baby for mother. Thanks for reading my opinion which is purely mine.
