while tracking the movement of 12978 which left Ajmer on 6/8/12, the table indicated a sheduled halt at Tirur on 8/7/12 at 1-18/1- 35 am.
The running status of 12978 of 6/7/12 from Ajmer indicated that the train had halted at Tirur at 1 -35 and departed at 1 - 37 a.m. Can anyone in the know things actually clarify on this. I had visited www.ss.indianrailways.gov.in . Permkolam Hariharan, pvh_46@yahoo.co.in

Further to my letter of 10th July, on the controversial subject of 12978 halt at Tirur,today also I tracked the movement of 12978 Exp. from Ajmer to Ernakulam, since today is its sheduled day of departure, viz. Friday, 13/07/2012 following the monsoon shedule. The shedule indicates that 12978 will arrive Tirur on 15/07/2012 at 1 -28 a. m and depart at 1 -30 a.m .The latest copy of "Trains at a Glance" July 2012 to July 2013 also confirms this timing at Tirur.

corroborates the information ,I do not think Palghat Div. or any other agency with a vested interest take a unilateral action to withdraw the halt at Tirur. I, genuinely feel that some not well-informed person might have misled this Forum causing unnecessary, avoidable inconvenience to the viewers of this Blog. I, would therefore request the Administrator to verify the information I have provided, which is available for everyone to see, and issue necessary clarification to put the record straight. Thanks.

Further to my notes , I have clarified in my Blog letter no.483884 that the latest South Zone Time Table effective from July 2012 clearly has indicated the departure timings of 12978 train at Tirur as 1 -20 hrs during Monsoon time and 00- 25 hrs on non-monsoon periods. The Time
shedule shown in our website is also outdated and needs to be corrected not only for the halts but also the timings at various stations. Perumkolam V Hariharan

At last I managed to get the latest South Zone Time Table effective from July 2012 onwards. In the Table 5A and 5A (M) Monsoon, it is clearly indicated that 12978
Ajmer -Ernakulam Marusagar departs from Tirur at 00-25 hrs and 1-20 hrs during Monsoon period. That should settle this controversy once and for all till the next revision as the travelling public is put to a lot of uncertainty and inconvenience.

The controversy & confusion whether 12978
ERl bound Marusagar exp stops at Tirur or not continues.Last timetable JULY,11 settled the issue by providing a halt at Tirur. But in March, '12, there was an unofficial news that the halt has been withdrawn. But with the introduction of the new timetable in July, 2012, the halt appears to have been restored. Unfortunately copies of time table are still not available in Chennai.

Recently, I was tracking the movement of 12978 which left Amer on 6/7/12 at 7 -40. via train shedule through www.sr.indianrailways.gov.in. It indicated both the sheduled arrival as well as the actual arrival and departure time at TIRUR, viz. i -18/1 -20, and 1 -35/1 -37 ,respectively on 8/7/2012.
This means that there is an official commercial halt at tirur for 12978. It will be good if the administrator clarifies on the matter. In the good old days Time Tables used to be sacrosanct and no official or politician could meddle with it as a matter of right. Perumkolam V. Hariharan

In the past, I have on different occasions indicated how the our railway tracks are over-utilised, and railway technical teams do hair splitting exercises to squeeze in Shatabdis or durontos (durantham) in the already water-tight shedules.
The results are there for us to see-- The Kalka Mail tragedy.

introduce a train if after exploring all the avenues they feel there is no scope wihout compromising on passenger safety. Unfortunately, our professionals are not allowed to work without fear or favour.
What has happened to all the safety funds that have been collected from passengers over the last several years? How much time do the railway staff really get on track maintenance given the heavy over-utilisation of capacities?
The need of the hour is safe ,reliable and reasonably quick trains within the ambit of safe transportation, basic amenities like drinking water at stations , shelters, clean toilets etc. One should really see the condition of some medium category mofussil stations. There are still some branch lines where the passengers have to climb on to the bogies since the train has not touched the small platform.
Our bullet trains and durontos can wait. Let railways reintroduce Janatha EXpresses

Dear friend,
I would like to clarify one thing. there is nothing like a permanent halt as far as railway is concerned. They have the prerogative to introduce or withdraw a halt. In the case of the so-called regular halts, the elimination or introduction of halts are generally effected with the introduction of a new Time-Table. However, if they indicate a halt is temporary, it can be withdrawn any time as it happened in the case of 12978 at Tirur. For your information, the halt for Tirur for 12977 is in vogue since 14/02/2010, now well over one year and four months! even in the revised time table effective from July 2011 , 12977 has a halt at Tirur. feel after some time, people will stop bothering about the temporary and permanent halt business.
Even in the case of the proposed SF expresses in the new timetable, halts have been provided at Tirur for Howrah Vivek SF exp., the Porbandar and Bhavnagar Kochuveli SF trains in both the directions. The dates are yet to be announced. However, it is a real challenge to squeeze in these trains in the already over utilised railway sections. I do hope the passengers are not put to serious compromises. PVH
