Rail activists demand cancellation of the train and utilise coaches for Mysuru-Karwar Express
The Yeshwantpur-Mangaluru Central night express, which was extended to Kannur within two years of its introduction on December 14, 2009, appears to be lacking patronage with just above 100 direct passengers travelling between Bengaluru/Mysuru and Kannur every day.
Information obtained under the Right to Information Act by The Hindu reveals that as many as 46,553 passengers travelled in reserve classes from Bengaluru/Mysuru to destinations in Kerala beyond Mangaluru Central—Kasaragod, Kanhangad, Payyanur, and Kannur— in 2016-2017 on Train No. 16517. On Train No.
16518, 38,326 passengers travelled from Kannur, Payyanur, Kanhangad, and Kasaragod to destinations beyond Mangaluru Central into Karnataka. The average number of passengers per day comes to 127 from Bengaluru to Kannur and 105 from Kannur to Bengaluru.
Long fight
The Hassan-Mangaluru section of the metre gauge was closed for gauge conversion to broad gauge in 1994 and the Railways took a whopping 14 years to complete the work. Though the track was certified to be fit to operate passenger trains in April 2007, the Railways introduced the first night express between Yeshwantpur and Mangaluru Central on December 8, 2007. While coastal Karnataka people had been demanding its extension to Karwar, the then Minister of State for Railways E. Ahmed got it extended to Kannur on December 14, 2009. Another Minister of State for Railways K.H. Muniyappa, who is from Karnataka, had to remain a mute spectator owing to politics of the coalition government. With pleas to Railways to extend the train to Karwar failing, coastal people had to approach the High Court of Karnataka which directed the Railways to extend the train to Karwar too. Thus, a combined train was introduced on October 18, 2012, which gets detached at Mangaluru Central with one portion going to Karwar and one to Kannur. The Bengaluru-Kannur portion of the train has nine coaches—four sleeper class, two each general sitting and luggage-cum-brake vans and one 3-Tier cum 2-Tier AC combined coach.
Cancel the train
S. Yogendra from Mysuru Grahakara Parishat demanded that the South Western Railway should cancel the Kannur service following poor patronage.
Instead, six coaches may be operated as Mysuru-Karwar-Mysuru Express to be attached and detached from Bengaluru-Karwar Express at Hassan as the Bengaluru-Karwar Express is being diverted via Shravanabelagola four days a week, Mr. Yogendra demanded.
Passenger patronage to Bengaluru-Kannur-Bengaluru Express via Mangaluru (16517/16518) during April 2016-March 2017
From places between Bengaluru and Mysuru to: Kasaragod (12,265); Kanhangad (11,715); Payyanur (10,681); Kannur (11,892) Total: 46,553; Average: 127 passengers per day
To Mysuru and beyond from: Kannur (9,181); Payyanur (9,258); Kanhangad (10,563); Kasaragod (9,324) Total: 3,8326; Average: 105 passengers per day

Oct 22 2017 (10:29)   Proposals to improve railway infrastructure in north Kerala

KJM WDM 3A Twins*^~   5 news posts
Entry# 2569878   News Entry# 320446         Tags   Past Edits
Ahead of the proposed high-level meeting between Railway Board Chairman Ashwani Lohani and Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan, the Malabar Mysore Rail Road Action Council (MMRRAC) led by environmentalists and retired Forest Department officials have put forth multiple suggestions for the development of rail infrastructure in north Kerala.
The realignment of the proposed Nilambur-Nanjangund rail line is a major suggestion. Because, the government had cleared the proposals to prepare Detailed Project Reports (DPRs) for two other associated projects, the Thalassery-Mysuru rail line and the Kannur airport-Mattannur rail line, O. Jayarajan, former IFS officer and spokesman of the MMRRAC, said.
the Nilambur-Nanjangund line has found a place in the Pink Book of Railways, the route is facing problems related to environment clearance. Since the present alignment is through the 84-km stretch of forest land, the chances of getting environment clearance may be remote,” he said. He said that it was better to realign the route by bypassing protected areas. It could be realigned from Nilambur through Feroke, Kozhikode and Koyilandy, and link the rail line to Thalassery-Mysuru line at Mananthavady.
“The construction length will be about 135 km on Nilambur-Feroke and Koyilandy-Mananthavady stretches. By taking up this proposal, Nilambur and Mananthavady can be connected to Kozhikode and Bengaluru. This will be a major boon for Malappuram and Wayanad districts,” Mr. Jayarajan said.
Delayed project
On the long-pending Guruvayoor-Thirunavaya rail line, he said that implementing the project would drastically reduce the distance from South Kerala to Mumbai and Bengaluru. The construction length would be approximately 46 km and the line would benefit the emerging port at Ponnani.
He said the newly converted broad gauge track of Palakkad- Pollachi would shortly get few trains from the South, including Amritha Express. “But no train service has been proposed towards the north. At least a train from Mumbai to Madurai via Palakkad-Pollachi route would benefit passengers of Malabar,” he added.
To improve rail service in Kozhikode and Kannur regions, the MMRRAC has suggested to extend the Kannur-Yeswanthpur Express via Mangaluru- Mysuru upto Kozhikode. Thus the train would become a connection train to Jan Shatabdi from Kozhikode to Thiruvananthapuram. Also, the people of Kozhikode will have direct connectivity to Mysuru and Bengaluru.
Similarly, the Yeswanthpur-Mangaluru Express via Shravanabelagola (Kudla Express) should be extended to Kozhikode. “This will be another gift to the people of Malabar since there is no day-train to Bengaluru from the region. The trains could be operated without disturbing the existing time schedule,” Mr. Jayarajan said.

Railways advances its timing to 4.55 p.m. from 5.40 p.m.
The Railways has revised the arrival timing of the Yeshwantpur-Karwar tri-weekly Express at Mangaluru Junction to 4.55 p.m. from the current 5.40 p.m., a reduction of 45 minutes in journey hours.
The revised timings will come into effect from June 7, said a communique from South Western Railway here.

The Hindu as well as several rail fan associations had pointed out that the diversion of trains via the shortest route did reduce the journey only by 10 minutes.
They had also pointed out that the Yeshwantpur-Karwar train takes 1.48 hours to traverse 15 km between Bantwal and Mangaluru Junction.
After the diversion, the train Yeshwantpur at 7.10 a.m. instead of the original timing of 7 a.m.
There is no change in its timing between Mangaluru Junction and Karwar.
Karwar-Yeshwantpur Express leaves Mangaluru Junction at 11.30 a.m. to reach Yeshwantpur at 8.30 p.m. However, the arrival of Yeshwantpur-Mangaluru Junction Gomateshwara Express (16575) is not yet revised.

Sorry a bit offtopic from the question that u raised ,
"People in Mangaluru don't speak Malayalam"....Really ?
Actually as per my experience in Mangalore, its the opposite.SOME can speak.
In mangaluru central i have heard even RPF talking in malayalam.
talking in malayalam.
Most of the shopkeepers taking in malayalam.
Ticket booking office people talking in malayalam.
AutoRickshaw people talking in malayalam.
The one who cleans Retiering rooms talking in malayalam.
Sorry, this is what i experienced in my journey to MAQ last Year.
So Some can talk malayalam ,so your comment "People in Mangaluru don't speak Malayalam" is wrong according to my travel experience.
