I booked a ticket through IRCTC and gave my berth preference as upper. There were 165 seats available in the train and they gave me a upper berth. However, the number is 70 and it is the last upper berth in the train near the door making it extremely irritating and difficult ? There are 164 more seats left. Is there any way I can get my seat number changes without cancelling the ticket ?

It may so happen that, you may get the cancelled berth. But why to worry, it's not like that. On 12th. I was allotted berth no 72. But I travelled comfortably. That journey cleared my apprehensions also.

I booked in Punjab Mail 54 days before the journey date, with 172 avbl, no. of passengers = 2, chosen Lower and middle berth. Guess what I got? Two Berth no. 32's in different coaches... ie S3 32, S4 32, both side uppers... Beat that!

Do not Cancel and book a new one. You may end up getting the same seat again. :)
First book a new one and if you are satisfied, then cancel the old one..

There is no such option existing to change the berths without cancelling tickets.. You will have to cancel it get a new one.. But I would advise against it.. There is not much problem.. Even i travelled on last SUB this time and there were no problems.. The only problem is in our minds..
