Hi Everyone, This is my first post at IRI. I am filmmaker trying to make a film on Bengal and am trying to visit the place where the famous train scene from patter panchali was shot. I have searched a lot for the location and initially thought it was somewhere near Boral village where the movie village scenes were shot. But a post at another side said it was on the narrow gauge Ahmadpur to Katwa line. Now being a bit of a rail head I had planned to include a sequence on a narrow gauge train but dropped it when I heard that Madam Mamata Bannerjee is having it upgrading to broad gauge (when she was the Railway minister). Now with Satyajit Raj connection it would be great to confirm if indeed the line has been converted and if the broad gauge railway line is operational.
it would be AMAZING if anyone knew where exactly the shot was taken on the Ahmadpur-Katwa line.
Reference: Pather Panchali 1955 (B/W Bangla) This was Satyajit Ray's debut film and first amongst the Apu trilogy. There are iconic train sequences showing a chugging train coming from a distance and leaving behind a trail of thick black smoke while the children Apu and Durga, much like loyal rail-fans, scamper through the fields to catch a glimpse of the train. The line depicted here was the Ahmadpur-Katwa narrow gauge section of Eastern Railway. (Contributed by Bhaskar Roy.)

Thanks for the quick reply. I guess there is not much chance of recreating the sequence then. Was imagining a couple of local kids to run as the train came by. Is there any other operational narrow gauge line in west bengal. Apart from the train to darjeeling. On the plains I mean?

Thanks Neora for the quick replies. Just feel a bit sad about it. Even the house in which Pather Panchali was shot has now been replaced with a newer construction. I guess the times are marching on.
Enjoy the ride while it lasts. Thanks.

There has recently been a lot of frustration among RFs when their Station Pics, Loco Pics, Train Pics get rejected because the "number is not showing", "shed is not visible", the loco/train is at a distance, Train Board is too small, "better pic available", etc. . To address this issue, effective tomorrow, ALL...

-@all members: As of recently, there has been a trend whereby minor name updates of Trains/Stations - whether such and such regional name should be there or not, whether the train should be called "Abc Express" or "Abc Superfast Express", etc. are threatening to take over the majority of Timeline entries. Also,...
