Jan 08 (15:27)   Redevelopment of Ernakulam Jn. station gets a boost - The Hindu

The long overdue proposal to redevelop the Ernakulam Junction railway station by building a modern station has got a shot in the arm, with the Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA) inviting request for quotation (RFQ) for the purpose.
The project to build a multi-rise building in the place of the existing station building is still in its preliminary stage. Private firms or a consortium of firms can participate in the bidding. The Thiruvananthapuram Division of the Southern Railway has already handed over the land where the present station is located to the RLDA. Now, it is up to the agency to take a call on tenders and execute the project, said a senior railway official.
stakeholder(s) will have to ready a design which makes optimal use of available space, pool in funds and construct the building. The land will be leased to them for a particular period, and they will be able to make commercial use of whatever space the Railway does not need. But the Railway will operate the entire premises, since it owns the land, he added.
The project’s concept says the station ought to be developed to international standards, as a multi-modal transport hub. The amenities must be disabled friendly too, having acess ramps, lifts, and tactile flooring. There must also be seamless flow of passengers in all weather conditions. The structures must also be eco-friendly and must make maximum use of light and ventilation.
The RLDA, a subsidiary of the Indian Railways, had earlier entrusted KITCO with the task of readying a report on amenities for passengers, eateries, multi-tier parking space for private and public transport vehicles, and a skywalk to the adjacent Kochi metro station (where too commercial space is available), apart from commercial ventures for which space could be earmarked in the building. The last date to submit RFQ is February 22.
. The Thiruvananthapuram Railway Division will involve with the project after the tender is awarded. On its part, the Railway is keen to extend three short platforms by a few hundred metres, so that they can hold trains having 24 coaches. The inadequate availability of lengthy platforms is one reason why express trains are held up outside the station, official sources said.

Amid the ongoing row over renaming Aurangabad city, Shiva Sena leader and former Union Minister has said that Mumbai Central station will soon be renamed.
The station will be known as Nana Shankarseth Terminus.
In March this year, the state cabinet approved renaming and the proposal was sent to the Minister and Ministry of Railways for further approvals.
There has been a
demand for renaming Mumbai Central Terminus as 'Nana Shankarshet Terminus' for several years.
In this regard, Union Home Minister has informed MP that the process is underway, and also sent him a letter.
Arvind Sawant said, "The Maha vikas Aghadi government approved the proposal in the Assembly. We had told the Minister of State for Home that preliminary approval was needed which we have not received till now, and they should pay immediate attention. He has now replied to me and said that the renaming process is underway and will be approved soon."
Nana Shankarseth was one of the first directors of India's first railway company.

Jan 05 (09:42)   Delayed return raises hard questions on KIA train schedule

On a high after Monday morning’s first train from the city, the swanky new halt station at the Kempegowda International Airport was not in sync with the delayed arrival of the DEMU from Bangarpet. Scheduled for 6.43 pm, the train chugged in only at 7.30 pm.
Less than 10 airport employees and a couple of mediapersons had arrived at the station by a shuttle bus from the terminal. But once inside the train, they were not prepared for the two 20-minute halts en route to the Yelahanka and Channasandra stations.
When the train
finally arrived at Baiyappanahalli, the clock read 9.13 pm, an hour and 38 minutes behind the scheduled arrival time of 7.35 pm. Crossing the bridge on to the metro terminal, passengers were in for another shock: The last metro had left the terminal at 9 pm.
Even if the fare is only Rs 15 from the halt station to Baiyappanahalli, will air passengers endure such a delay to bypass the traffic and costly cabs?
This was a question posed by the few travellers on the train. “They may not bother a delay of five to 10 minutes, but not this,” was the general verdict.
However, Mohan, a frequent traveller on the route, hastened to add that such delays were a rarity. Besides, this was the first day for the train. He hoped once the schedule is stabilised, the train would be on time. “This is critical, especially for people heading to the airport to catch a flight.”
Having campaigned for the airport rail link for years, urban rail analyst Sanjeev Dyamannavar agreed that maintaining timings was extremely important to build confidence among commuters.
“Airport schedules are very strict for both employees and air passengers. Hopefully, once the track capacity is enhanced, these delays will be sorted out,” he said.
Electrification of the Yelahanka–Devanahalli line, a crossing station at Doddajala and track doubling between Yelahanka and Guntakal would all eventually resolve the issue. “With these issues sorted out, we could have five pairs of trains in the morning and an equal number in the evening in three months’ time,” he noted.

WR Saves More Than Rs. 32.22 Cr By Converting EOG LHBrakes Into Head on Generation (HOG) System In 2019-2020 & Rs. 83 Cr in the last 4 years
Photo caption: The newly converted 3-Phase state-of-the-art WAP7 locomotive.
Western Railway is continuously working towards contributing extensively to ‘Swachh Rail, Swachh Bharat’
Mission through new and ingenious ways. With an increased emphasis onreduction in operation cost of train, ultimately providing a greener& cleaner environment, the Electrical Department of Western Railway has commissioned 67 locomotives converted to Head on Generation (HOG) System till now, which the highest on Indian Railways.
Text Box: In 2019-20, WR modified 34 rakes making it numero uno to run the highest no. of HOG converted trains on Indian Railways. According to a press release issued by Shri Ravinder Bhakar – Chief Public Relations Officer of WR, Western Railway has commissioned 673-Phase state-of-the-art WAP7 locomotives in which 25 kV Over Head Power Supply is converted to 750V by 500 KVA converters installed in the locomotives and transmitted through electrical couplers between coaches to meet electrical load of train. It is worth mentioning that in the current financial year, Western Railway has modified electrical circuits in 34rakes which is the highest on Indian Railways by a zonal railway. As on 20thJanuary, 2020 out of the 65 HOG compliant LHB rakes primarily owned by Western Railway, 51 LHB rakes are running in services of 49 regular train pairs trains on HOG system. Efforts are being made to facilitate further proliferation of HOG system and savings in cost of train operation by expediting work of electrification on Western Railway.

Text Box: WR has recorded net savings of Rs. 83 crores in the last 4 years in electrical operations. Shri Bhakar added that the HOG conversion work on Indian Railway was first started in Mumbai Central Division of Western Railway in November 2015, when the first rake of Train no. 12951/52 Mumbai – New Delhi Rajdhani Express was converted and taken over on HOG system. Since then, the HOG rake holding & locomotives has increased progressively. As a result, Western Railway has recorded net savings of Rs. 32.22 cr during current financial year 2019-20 (upto 20thJanuary, 2020) and a total net saving during 2019-20 is expected to be Rs. 45cr (approximately). It is applaudable that due to the switching over to HOG system, Western Railway has been able to achieve net savings of Rs. 83.06cr since December 2015 to 20th January 2020. The savings is on account of lower cost of electric energy drawn from overhead lines vis-a-vis cost of energy generated by operating the DG sets installed in power cars. In addition to the savings, there has been drastic reduction in the consumption of High Speed Diesel (HSD) oil i.e. 16,696.843 KL which has led to reduction in CO2 emissions by 44,080 MT & thus helped in making the environment cleaner and pollution free. It is truly commendable that with various green initiatives and ideas under its belt, Western Railway continues to be on the path of guarding the environment by its commitment towards creating a cleaner and healthier environment through its green initiatives.
